TOPIC : SUB TOPIC:

Hydrocarbons Chemical properties of Alkenes

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Students should be able to: 1. describe the chemical reactions of alkenes as exemplified by the following reactions of ethene: (i) addition of hydrogen, steam, hydrogen halides, halogens, bromine water and concentrated sulphuric acid, (ii) oxidation using KMnO4, O2/Ag, (iii) ozonolysis, (iv) polymerization 2. describe the mechanism of electrophilic addition in alkenes with reference to Markovnikovs rule

ACTIVITIES :

1. Lecture with courseware cd 2. Group Discussion 3. Q&A 4. Exercise

REFLECTIONS:

30 % students did not understand ozonolysis, teacher use power point to explain ozonolysis.

DATE : 5/4/2012 DAY : Thursday

TIME : 11.25-1.10 O LECTURE O TUTORIAL O O EXPERIMENT OTHERS :

CLASS : US 2

SUBJECT: Chemistry

TOPIC : SUB TOPIC:

Experiment 20
To investigate the effect of solvent volume and number of extractions on the percentage of extracted product

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Able to plan and to carry out an experiment ;

By means of a measuring cylinder, transfer 25.0 cm3 of KA 3 into a 150 cm3 conical flask. Then pipette 25.0 cm3 of KA 1 into this conical flask. Close this conical flask with a stopper and shake vigorously for 10 minutes. Leave the mixture to settle for 5 minutes so that two layers are formed. Then, by means of a pipette, transfer 10.0 cm3 of the organic layer, that is the upper layer, into a titration flask and titrate the solution with KA 2. Use phenolphthalein as indicator. One accurate titration will suffice. Record your readings in the table below

ACTIVITIES :

1. Experiment 2. Lab report submission.

REFLECTIONS:

Objective attained
