BACKGROUND OF GLOBAL OUTREACH UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA

PROGRAM

(GOP)

GOP is an internationalization program to further globalize the students of UTM through academic visits to universities around the world. In 2009, around 100 students participated in three GOP to Thailand, China and Brunei. This has opened up the horizon and extended students experience to the higher education in other countries. The exposure of the overseas visits and organizing the GOP helps to develop students generic skills and add values to their study programs. Participating in the UTM Global Outreach Programme is an exciting and challenging way of broadening students personal, academic and professional horizons. Through the program, the students may:

Globalize educational experience by adding an international dimension to the degree. Enhance academic opportunities beyond those offered at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Establish professional and career opportunities by networking with other students, academics and professional organizations. Improve language skills, cross-cultural understanding, and cross-cultural and interpersonal communication. Experience personal growth by developing self confidence, independence, and social skills.

Therefore, Global Outreach Programme introduced by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is expected to provide a platform for students to expand their knowledge in both academic and human skills. The SciTech Tour 12 carries the motto Reaching for Infinite Knowledge includes 20 postgraduate students from Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) and Faculty of Petroleum and Renewable Energy Engineering (FPREE) with the purpose of gaining experience and knowledge from universities abroad, apart from increasing their communication skills. Therefore, a visit to Seoul National University (SNU) which is one of the top 3 universities in South Korea; is organized so that scholars from both universities will be able to exchange valuable knowledge and information in the engineering field especially. Aside from that, through this academic visit, scholars from UTM will be exposed to the Smart Grid system in South Koreas Jeju Island which serves as a location for the largest Smart Grid community that promotes state-of-the-art Smart Grid monitoring and operational system. By this visit, scholars will be exposed to recent developments in technology and research as well as industrial work management. It is hoped that this program will be realized and become an unforgettable experience for the students of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

MISSION
Exposing students to challenges that they will face in the global level to improve their learning and communication skills. Besides that, this program is to encourage potential partnership in research intelligence between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Koreas institutions i.e. Seoul National University (SNU) and Korea Smart Grid Institute (KSGI).

OBJECTIVES
Expanding scholars vision through interactions with international communities in an effort to achieve Exposing scholars to different approaches and methods in learning. An opportunity for UTM scholars to keep abreast with the latest technology in South Korea through visits to the Worlds Largest Smart Grid Community.
