Human hair may be curly or straight, and either a blonde-haired person, red, brown, black, white, or a mixture thereof. But everyone's hair is relatively the same in the way it grows. Hair is a threadlike structure that grows from the skin. Below the scalp, at the bottom of each hair, is a tiny pit called a follicle. It leads down to the hair's root. Cells at the base of the root begin to move up. As they do, they harden and become a strand of hair. The hair on your head grows in stages. Follicles actively produce hair for three to six years, then rest for about three months. There's an average of 100,000 hairs on the human head, and about 10% are resting at any given time. We lose about 70100 hairs every day from our resting follicles! Sometimes it seems your hair grows fast, but it normally grows less than inch (13 mm) a month. Children's hair grows faster than adults' hair, and everyone's hair grows faster in summer than winter! ____3. You can conclude that about 90% of the follicles on your head a. are resting and not producing hair. b. are too small to hold the root of a hair. c. are producing hair at this time. d. have been closed and can't produce a hair. What might you logically conclude about the growth of hair in summer? a. More people get their hair cut in hot summer weather. b. Cold weather makes plants and hair grow longer. c. The Hare With Many Friends A Hare was very popular with the other beasts who all claimed to be her friends. But one day she heard the hounds approaching and hoped to escape them by the aid of her many Friends. So, she went to the horse, and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. But he declined, stating that he had important work to do for his master. He felt sure, he said, that all her other friends would come to her assistance. She then applied to the bull, and hoped that he would repel the hounds with his horns. The bull replied: I am very sorry, but I have an appointment with a lady; but I feel sure that our friend the goat will do what you want. The goat, however, feared that his back might do her some harm if he took her upon it. The ram, he felt sure, was the proper friend to apply to. So she went to the ram and told him the case. The ram replied: Another time, my dear friend. I do not like to interfere on the present occasion, as hounds have been known to eat sheep as well as hares. The Hare then applied, as a last hope, to the calf, who regretted that he was unable to help her, as he did not like to take the responsibility upon himself, as so many older persons than himself had declined the task. By this time the hounds had caught the Hare, and tore him to shreds. The story tells us that: a. Having many friends is an advantage. b. Friends are your support in time of need. c. It is better to have many friends in dangerous situations. d. It is better to have a few good friends than having superficial ones. The Story of King Midas King Midas was a very kind man who ruled his kingdom fairly, but he was not one to think very deeply about what he said. One day, while walking in his garden, he saw an elderly satyr asleep in the flowers. Taking pity on the old fellow, King Midas let him go without punishment. When the god Dionysus heard about it, he rewarded King Midas by granting him one wish. The king thought for only a second and then said I wish for everything I touch to turn to gold." And so it was. The beautiful flowers in his garden turned toward the sun for light, but when Midas approached and touched them, they stood rigid and gold. The king grew hungry and thin, for each time he tried to eat, he found that his meal had turned to gold. His lovely daughter, at his loving touch, turned hard and fast to gold. His water, his bed, his clothes, his friends, and eventually the whole palace was gold. King Midas saw that soon his whole kingdom would turn to gold unless he did something right away. He asked Dionysus to turn everything back to the way it had been and take back his golden touch. Because the king was ashamed and very sad, Dionysus took pity on him and granted his request. Instantly, King Midas was poorer that he had been, but richer, he felt, in the things that really count. The story of King Midas shows us that: a. All that glitter is not gold. b.
