SALEM NEW YORK-JACKOS CORNER OPENS FOR BUSINESS. On Saturday June 30, Jackos Corner opened for business in Salem. A former business at this location is known by generations simply as Jackos. Jackos was an ice cream, soda and candy shop run by J.C. Tomasi for 63 years in the Village of Salem, New York. Theresa and Justin Rushinski recently opened Jackos Corner offering Salems Battenkill Creamery ice cream, old fashioned sodas, floats, smoothies, sundaes, banana boats served up at the original soda fountain. In addition Jackos Corner offers Battenkill Creamery milk, produce, old time candies, bulk health foods, maple syrup and fresh baked goods. The baked goods include cupcakes, biscotti, cookies, pies, fruit bars, and fresh baked bread. Customers can also order baked goods at the store. The Rushinskis stated they are trying to offer as many locally produced products as possible. Jackos Corner features many of the original items from the shop run by J.C. Tomasi including a Wurlitzer juke box, a pedestal weight scale and the mirror (with Tiffany Glass) behind the counter. It was on this mirror that generations of Salem students had their senior pictures displayed. Many of these senior pictures have been preserved in a photo album and can be seen at the store. The store is open daily for all to come and enjoy. Jackos Corner is located in the center of Salem, New York at the corner of Route 22 and East Broadway.

WHITE ON GREEN PARTY- On Saturday, July 21, from 6-8 p.m. the Cambridge Historical Society and Museum will be hosting a White on Green - white wine on a green lawn - garden party on the lawn of the Museum on Broad Street in Cambridge. This is a first-time fund raiser of this type for the Museum, and we hope it will attract many of our Cambridge and surrounding area friends to come and support the Museum. There will be a small donation for the event. The evening will consist of wine, punch and fancy hors-doeuvres served on the lawn, a silent auction and live music. Since 2012 is the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Bennington, and General Burgoyne marched through Cambridge on his way to Bennington, to commemorate this there will be a special exhibit of The American Revolution From Start to Finish As Expressed in Popular Art. This art exhibit will be housed in the beautiful carriage house in the backyard of the Museum and is part of a private collection of a member of the Museum. We are looking forward to a beautiful, warm summer evening; however, should it rain, the event will be held indoors. Please mark July 21 from 6-8 on your calendar and come enjoy a fun-filled evening with your friends while supporting your Museum. DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE PEMBER BOOK SALE. The Friends of the Pember Library and the Slate Valley Garden Club will again join together to present their annual Books, Buns, and Blooms Sale. The event will take place at the Mary J. Tanner School on Rte. 22 in Middle Granville, NY on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14, beginning at 9:00 am both days. The Garden Club sale will feature many varieties of garden plants as well as baked goods. The book sale will offer thousands of gently used fiction, non-fiction, and childrens books as well as AV materials, records, tapes, CDs, and books on tape. Prices are $.25 for paperback books and $1.00 for hardcovers. Patrons can fill an entire bag we provide for only $1.00 on Saturday from 1 pm to 3 pm. All of our books are stored at the Pember Library on West Main Street in Granville and we must transport them to the sale. We need the help and support of many volunteers to accomplish this task. If you are able to help, even for a short time, please join us at the Pember on Tuesday, July 10 at 9:00 am. We also need volunteers to unpack the boxes and help with the set up at the Mary J. Tanner School. We will be there on Tuesday, July 10 at 9:00 and also on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Book donations are accepted anytime the library is open. Please no encyclopedias, textbooks, or books that are destined for the dump. If you have large amounts of books to donate, it would be best to call ahead so that we can have someone on hand to help unload your vehicle. For information, call 518 642-2525.

Regarding the Supreme Courts ruling on Obamacare, according to George Will, Conservatives won a substantial victory on Thursday. The physics of American politics -- actions provoking reactions -- continues to move the crucial debate, about the nature of the American regime, toward conservatism. Chief Justice John Roberts has served this cause. The health care legislation's expansion of the federal government's purview has improved our civic health by rekindling interest in what this expansion threatens -- the framers' design for limited government. Conservatives distraught about the survival of the individual mandate are missing the considerable consolation prize they won when the Supreme Court rejected a constitutional rationale for the mandate -- Congress' rationale -- that was pregnant with rampant statism. The case challenged the court to fashion a judicially administrable principle that limits Congress' power to act on the mere pretense of regulating interstate commerce. At least Roberts got the court to embrace emphatic language rejecting the Commerce Clause rationale for penalizing the inactivity of not buying insurance: "The power to regulate commerce presupposes the existence of commercial activity to be regulated. ... The individual mandate, however, does not regulate existing commercial activity. It instead compels individuals to become active in commerce by purchasing a product, on the ground that their failure to do so affects interstate commerce. Construing the Commerce Clause to permit Congress to regulate individuals precisely because they are doing nothing would open a new and potentially vast domain to congressional authority. ... Allowing Congress to justify federal regulation by pointing to the effect of inaction on commerce would bring countless decisions an individual could potentially make within the scope of federal regulation, and -- under the government's theory -- empower Congress to make those decisions for him." The court held that the mandate is constitutional only because Congress could have identified its enforcement penalty as a tax. The court thereby guaranteed that the argument ignited by the mandate will continue as the principal fault line in our polity. The mandate's opponents favor a federal government as James Madison fashioned it, one limited by the constitutional enumeration of its powers. The mandate's supporters favor government as Woodrow Wilson construed it, with limits as elastic as liberalism's agenda, and powers acquiring derivative constitutionality by being necessary to, or efficient for, implementing government's ambitions. By persuading the court to reject a Commerce Clause rationale for a president's signature act, the conservative legal insurgency against Obamacare has won a huge victory for the long haul. Any democracy, even one with a written and revered constitution, ultimately rests on public opinion, which is shiftable sand. Conservatives understand the patience requisite for the politics of democracy -- the politics of persuasion. Elections matter most; only they can end Obamacare. But in Roberts' decision, conservatives can see the court has been persuaded to think more about the constitutional language that has most enabled the promiscuous expansion of government while intending to limit it.
