Those Were The Days

Well known visionary helped create two major highway systems
By Paul Niemann One way to judge an innovations importance is to imagine life without it. This story is about two such innovations. Both were a result of war, namely World War II and the Cold War. In order to keep his identity secret at this point, we will refer to him by his first and middle initials: D.D. The first innovation impacted our transportation system, while the second one impacted our communication system. More than 50 years ago, in February of 1955, D.D. said, The united forces of our communication and transportation systems are dynamic elements in the very name we bear United States. Without them, we would be a mere alliance of many separate parts. When D.D. visited Germany during World War II, he noticed how the autobahns improved that countrys transportation system. He also felt that an improved highway system was necessary for a strong national defense. The result of his work is our nations interstate highway system. It began in 1956 when the president signed the Federal Aid Highway Act. Here are a few little-known facts about our interstate system: The longest interstate is I-90, which covers 3,081 miles from Boston to Seattle, while the shortest interstate is I-878 in New York City. It covers exactly 3,696 feet, which is seven-tenths of a mile. Only one state has no interstate highway. That would be Alaska. Hawaii has three interstate highways, although they are obviously not connected to other states. When the last stoplight on the interstate system was removed in the 1980s in Wallace, Idaho, the locals gave it a proper burial in the local cemetery, complete with a 21-gun salute. Our nations interstate system is called the Eisenhower Interstate System, named after the visionary who created it D.D., as in President Dwight David Eisenhower. He was our 34th president, from 1953 1961. Pretty neat, but the other highway system credited to President Eisenhower circles the world many times each day. That would be the information superhighway known as the internet. When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, the U. S. government figured that a nuclear attack could wipe out our intelligence system. To prevent this, the Department of Defense created ARPA, which stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency. By 1969, computer scientists had begun efforts to connect supercomputers from four major universities (UCLA, Stanford, UC-Santa Barbara and the University of Utah) that could exchange information with each other. This computer network became known as the ARPAnet. The National Science Foundation linked these supercomputers together and they eventually replaced the ARPAnet in 1990, becoming what is now the Internet. It was President Eisenhower who made the decision to create the Advanced Research Projects Agency, even though he did not work for the Department of Defense. Here are a few interesting facts that you might not have known about the internet: In 1991, the inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim BernersLee, chose not to patent it so that everyone could have access to the Web, bypassing a fortune in the process. He also knew that the only way it could reach its full potential was to leave it unpatented. The early version of the internet was designed to allow military installations to exchange information with each other by computer. Despite the fact that there are now millions of web sites, there were only 130 web sites in 1993. In addition to playing a major role in creating both the interstate highway and the internet, President Eisenhower also put an end to the Korean War.

National parks offer affordable Summer fun close to home

You can make history, culture, natural beauty and scientific exploration a part of your life this summer by visiting a national park near you. The nations 397 national parks not only protect some of Americas most iconic treasures, but they also tell diverse stories and teach valuable lessons about our shared heritage. National Parks are fun and affordable tourist destinations for families, friends and even solo travelers looking for a healthy dose of exploration. School may be out for summer, but the pursuit of knowledge should never take a break and a national park is like a classroom, but way more fun. Here are some great ideas on how to learn at a national park near you: Commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a trip to a battlefield. Visit the childhood home of a historical figure to learn about day-to-day living in a different era. Experience the log cabin in Kentucky where Abraham Lincoln was born, or marvel through Teddy Roosevelts childhood home in New York City. Connect with your past at a place that has special meaning to your family history. Discover an array of wildlife and plant life and truly appreciate the parks biodiversity. On your visit, take a guided walk with a park ranger. Be sure to look up, look down and all around to make a game of spotting as many species as you can. Encourage your children to connect to the science, history and natural wonder of parks by becoming a Junior Ranger, or if you cant make it to the park, explore the

WebRanger program online. Howd that boulder get there? Discover the geology of canyons, mountains and other scenic landscapes. National park visitor centers can provide you with resources to help you understand the ground below you. Challenge yourself to an outdoor adventure like camping, biking or rafting. Pick up skills like pitching a tent and cooking outdoors. National parks face many challenges, from threats to wildlife, to the need for more funding. Learn about these concerns and what you can do to help locally and nationally. Our national parks are the soul of this country, says Tom Kiernan, President of the National Parks Conservation Association. These are special places that can inspire us and connect us to nature and our shared heritage. The National Park System was created with enjoyment in mind, so plan a trip that will be fun for you and your family. The good news is that you might not need to travel far; there may be one close to home. Plan your trip at www. nps.gov/findapark. The National Park System, which covers over 83 million acres nationwide, preserves natural and historical sites, creates jobs, benefits local economies, and educates a diverse public. This summer, help protect its future by fostering the next generation of park-lovers. For more information on how you can help protect our national parks, and plan your next vacation visit www. npca.org. Cuyahoga National Park

Cincinnati hosts great events!

KROHN CONSERVATORY
Youd have to travel a good distance from Cincinnati to visit a rainforest and a desert or come to Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Parks nationally recognized showcase of more than 3,500 plant species from around the world. The world changes throughout the year with special exhibits and programs, including the everpopular springtime Butterfly Show. On Wings of Harmony will feature thousands of vibrant, colorful butterflies from every continent on earth (with the exception of Antarctica!). They will be in free flight throughout the showroom, often fluttering together through the ribs of a 10-foot recycled aluminum globe in a specially designed garden. Now thats harmony at its very best! The butterfly exhibit runs through June 24, 2012, but you can always visit the rainforest waterfall and exotic plants on permanent display in the Palm, Tropical, Desert and Orchid houses. Krohn Conservatory located at 1501 Eden Park Drive in Eden Park is itself architecturally significant, having been built in 1933 at the height of the Art Deco era. But its whats inside those aluminum and glass walls that make Krohn Conservatory truly special.

The Roman city of Pompeii was frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Pompeii's archeological treasures rarely leave Italy, and this national touring exhibit marks the first time that these rare treasures will come to the region. Room-sized frescos, marble and bronze sculptures, jewelry, gold coins, and hundreds of priceless ancient artifacts join body casts of the volcano's victims, eerily preserved in their final frantic moments. Don't miss this glimpse through a unique window into the ancient past. Now through August 12.

Travel with a herd of caribou, plunge into the ocean with the walruses and follow a mother polar bear and her two cubs in this brand new film from Warner Bros. Pictures, MacGillivray Freeman Films and IMAX Corporation. Feel the determination of the mother polar bear to keep her cubs alive in the face of natural predators. Youll find yourself emotionally involved in the story of this young polar bear family as you see how they cope with their rapidly changing climate. The film is narrated by Meryl Streep with songs by Paul McCartney.

The famous
The Great Race, Americas premier old car rally, is coming to the Great Lakes, covering 19 cities, 2 countries and 4 states and is expected to bring up to 100 antique automobiles to the area including a stop in Findlay on June 30th. The event is free to the public along its entire route. The communities along the route look forward to having these great cars and drivers race through the area. The endurance road rally for antique and classic cars will begin in Traverse City, Mich., on the shore of Grand Traverse Bay an

GREAT RACE
arm of Lake Michigan on June 23. The following weekend it will roll back into the Detroit area after traveling approximately 2,000 miles through two countries and the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. The race will travel completely around three of the Great Lakes and pass within sight of the other two. Once the race leaves Traverse City, it will travel north across the border into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie, where locks join lakes Superior and Huron. From there it will travel east along the

Comes to Ohio
north shore of Lake Huron, south toward Lake Ontario, then east again toward the St. Lawrence River before entering the United States at Thousand Islands. The route turns west along lakes Ontario and Erie in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio the last few days before returning to Michigan. The Great Race, which was run coast to coast for 25 years from 1983-2007, is not a speed race, but a distance rally. The vehicles, antique vintage cars, trucks, and motorcycles with body and drive train built 1969 and earlier, each with a driver and navigator, who can switch off duties during the day. Each day the team receives a set of course instructions that indicate every turn, speed change, stop, and start that the team must make throughout the day (usually 220 to 250 such instructions per day). Along the course route there will be from 4 to 7 secret checkpoints recording the exact time that the team passes that point. The objective is to arrive at each checkpoint at the correct time, not the fastest. The score for each team is the result of the teams ability to follow the designated course instructions precisely. Every second off the perfect time (early or late) at each checkpoint is a penalty point. This format is much more mentally demanding than a flat-out crosscountry race. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start and hopefully finish one minute apart if

all goes according to plan. Also, GPS, computers, and cell phones are not permitted and odometers are taped over. This is a test of human mental agility and endurance as well as classic car endurance, rather than programming capability. The course avoids timed segments on interstate highways, opting instead for scenic local, county, and state highways whenever possible through some of the prettiest country in the United States. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day. THE OLDER THE BETTER? Cars range in age from the early 1900s to 1969, with most having been manufactured before

World War II. The oldest car in almost two decades will compete in the 2012 Great Race. Former Grand Champions Alan and Mary Travis have never shied away from a challenge. They won the Great Race in 1993 from Huntington Beach, Calif., to Norfolk, Va., in their 1910 Knox Raceabout while many contestants were traveling in their enclosed Model As and 1930s Ford Coupes. And two years ago Alan, who was also the winner of the 1987 Great Race from Disneyland in California to Disney World in Florida along with navigator Wayne Stanfield in a 1916 Mitchell, raced a 1914 Excelsior in the Motorcycle Cannonball from Kitty Hawk, N.C., to Santa Monica, California Now they will be racing a 1907

8 GOOD TIMES June/July 2012

Renault in the Great Race. The 105-year-old Renault is nine years older than the next oldest car already registered in the 2012 Great Race a 1916 Hudson. In fact, there will be three 1916 Hudsons in this years event: Over the years, the Great Race has stopped in hundreds of cities big and small. When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival. As many as 40,000 people have been at stops in years past While the towns that the course will run through are publicized in advance, the actual route itself is kept secret from the drivers and navigators. Each year, race organizers give the Great American City award to the town along the route with the most receptive audience. The race tends to be a festive and patriotic affair, with the

streets lined with flags and marching bands playing. Look for full schedule on page 10.

HISTORY The Great Race was organized by Texans Tom McRae and Interstate Batteries chairman Norm Miller. It was named for, and partially inspired by, the 1965 movie of the same name. The rights to the race were purchased from Howard Williams of Oklahoma City, OK in the early 80s. An inaugural race was held that year from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Indianapolis for the Memorial Day 500 race event.

The drivers of these vintage cars come prepared to drive in all types of weather.

Doug and Howard Sharp, the father-and-son team from Fairport, New York, won 2011 Great Race their 1911 Velie H1 Racetype. While longtime competitors in the Great Race and in other vintage car rallies, last years event proved far from smooth sailing for the team, as they constantly battled to repair their century-old car along the route from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Bennington, Vermont. The radiator leaked coolant the entire trip, and one of the tires ended up being held together with duct tape toward the end of the race. But the duos efforts paid off with an overall score of 54.29 seconds, winning the Expert division as well as the $20,000 grand prize for the event. The age of their Velie in this case helped boost the duo ahead of their competition: In the Great Race, older vehicles receive a better age factor, and nobody else drove a car as old as the Velie this year.

rator? I asked. Do you like the way our house looks? Sure, he said, while flipping on the TV and digging into a bowl of ice cream. Whats not to like? He is a happy man as long as there is Golf Channel on TV and Blue Bunny in the freezer. He is clearly not consumed by the lack of throw pillows with colors that pop in our living room. Eventually, after I splurged on a few truly-needed new curtains and a couple of lampshades, I settled back in to my life in a lived-in house. There are shoes by the door, newspapers on the table, dirty

clothes in the laundry room and dog hairs on the carpet. My ceilings remain stark white, the dcor is decidedly not showroom material and my pillows still dont pop. But Im happy with it. And thats the biggest prize of all. Mary Beth Weisenburger lives in a comfy house that will never be featured in Better Homes and Gardens. You may be focused on getting in shape for swimsuit season, but take a break from the gym this summer and spend some time on your financial fitness. Here are six tips to help get your investment portfolio into prime condition.

Six tips for achieving financial fitness

and achieve more control over how your money is invested. Consolidating accounts may also make it easier to monitor the performance of your investments and gives you the opportunity to ensure theyre properly allocated.

away as much as you can to build your retirement nest egg. 3. Grow stronger. The fluctuating financial markets impact industries and individual investments differently, and often in ways that are difficult to predict. You can strengthen your portfolio by making sure your investment dollars are spread across a variety of investments. With diversified investments, your overall portfolio is not as likely to be derailed should one investment topple in value. Rather than trying to pick individual stocks and time the market, consider pacing yourself with systematic investments and think long-term. 4. Achieve the right balance. In light of the fickle nature of financial markets, even a well-balanced portfolio can look different than what you may have expected over time. Therefore, its wise to periodically assess the volatility of your investments across and within asset classes (stocks, bonds, and so forth) and rebalance your portfolio to achieve the desired asset allocation. A financial advisor can help you apply asset allocation strategies, and may have access to tools that will help you decide what may be a good match for your risk tolerance and goals see tip #6. 5. Trim your waste. The Internet has made it easy to securely monitor your financial affairs while also helping to minimize paper waste. Question every printed piece you receive related to your portfolio. Is it absolutely essential to receive a paper statement? Do you really need to print that 100-page prospectus? Review the options provided by your financial institution and take advantage of their green initiatives if youre comfortable managing your accounts online. With regard to your personal paper trail, keep in mind that your tax records and supporting documents should be maintained for seven years, while credit card statements can be tossed after a year. When disposing of documents, always use a shredder to keep your personal information safe from identity theft. Follow this advice, and your file cabinet will be slimmer in no time. 6. Enlist a personal trainer for your finances. Like many activities, managing investments is more funand potentially more productivewhen you have a knowledgeable person by your side. A skilled financial advisor can guide you through simple exercises to help improve your investment fitness and cheer you on in pursuit of your financial dreams and goals. Together you can apply disciplined strategies designed to strengthen your investment portfolio and help you get in the best financial shape of your life.
