purpoSe
The primary purpose of the first Futures Team event was to introduce the Southall big Conversation to people who are currently involved in the Future of Southall group, and extend it to a wider group of people who are not currently (but could potentially become) actively involved. The event was structured to generate ideas to make Southall a better place, along three lines: Small Ideas: ideas for modest interventions that could be achieved quite quickly, with a significant cumulative impact on Southall; Big Ideas: ideas about changes, at any scale, that could make a transformational difference to Southall; and Scenarios for Change: Considering the type of change that people want to see in Southall.

programme
The programme was divided into four sessions: Session 1. Welcome & Small ideas Session 2. Plenary Session 3. Workshop on big ideas Session 4. Southall Change barometer Session 1. welcome & Small Ideas in the arrival area, participants were offered refreshments and invited by facilitators to discuss the area in general terms in a number of ways. Firstly, using the large aerial photographwith principal landmarks, facilities, street names, and major areas of change clearly marked participants were invited to identify where they live, work, or study, and to indicate places they like and dislike. Secondly, facilitators supported and encouraged participants to fill out their small ideas postcards, which they then collected and attached to a large display stand. Please see appendix 1 for more detail. Session 2. plenary Cllr Julian Bell welcomed participants to the college and gave an overview of the work that Ealing Council is doing, and borough Commander andy Rowell outlined the metropolitan polices current initiatives int Southall. urban initiatives Managing Director Kelvin Campbell then introduced the big Conversation via a short presentation, explaining the context, purpose, and approach, and raising a number of key questions for consideration during the event. Please see appendix 2 for the slideshow presentation. Session 3. workshop on Big Ideas Participants were invited to form into groups of approximately ten, seated at large tables each with a facilitator. The facilitators encouraged each participant to think up a big idea that could make a transformational difference to Southall in the long term. Everyone was then invited to make a three-minute pitch to their group to promote their big idea for improving or changing Southall. a floating facilitator circulated among tables to collect the big ideas after each is presented, and attached them to a series of panels, one for each theme. Please see appendix 1 for more detail.
Session 4. Southall Change Barometer in the final session, participants were asked to consider what type of change they wanted to see in Southall. Three large swing barometers were set up at the front of the workshop area, and were used to measure opinion for changing Southall in a particular way. The aim was to draw out the appetite for change in the area and the vision for the type of future that should be created. baRoMETER 1 How should Southall change? More SMALL changesMore BIG changes This barometer allowed participants to debate whether Southall should be subject to a number of major projects that might include substantive redevelopment, or rather a series of smaller, more incremental changes. baRoMETER 2 Where should Southall focus its resources? Providing LOCAL needsattracting VISITORS This dimension tested whether the focus should rather be on meeting unresolved local needs, or further attracting external visitors and investors. This barometer baRoMETER 3 What should Southall be like? More MAINSTREAM placeMore UNIQUE place This was designed to understand participants views on whether Southall should become more normal, or whether it should become even more special.
