PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners, While I am on vacation this month, I offer this Reflection for your consideration. Msgr. Richard The prophet Ezekiel reports that the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet. God sent him to the Israelites, describing them as rebels who have rebelled against meHard of face and obstinate of heart. Ouch! But after Ezekiels visit, says God, even though they are a rebellious housethey shall know that a prophet has been among them. This vision of obstinacy among the Israelites reminds us to pray as the psalmist invites: To you I lift up my eyes who are enthroned in heaven. Our hope, as we lift our eyes, is that we be attentive to the mystery of Christ among us. How very interesting that we find Ezekiels report paired today with the gospel story from Saint Mark in which we hear the lament: A prophet is not without honor except in his native place. Those who failed to receive Jesus are not unlike those who in Ezekiels time were hard of face and obstinate of heart. Luke Timothy Johnson, who teaches New Testament at Emory University, invites us to seek to identify the powers and principalities at work in patterns of social behavior that systematically deceive, enslave, and oppress those who are other and vulnerable. The churchs call is to liberate all Gods people from the deeds and systems that are intended to hurt God by harming humans. Gods own vision of this world transformed in justice and peace prompts us to look for a new heaven and a new earth, where the fullness of [Gods] peace will shine forth and in which will be gathered those of every race and tongueto share with them the unending banquet of unity. In the Collect for todays Mass, we prayed that the God who has raised a fallen world might bestow eternal gladness on those who have been rescued from slavery to sin. This cannot happen until we seek to be those people who know that a prophet has been among them. Such will be evident when we have devoted ourselves to bringing about this vision of Jesus, when we live in communion with our pope and bishop, and all the Bishops and [Gods} entire people. Then the Church will be a sign of unity and an instrument of [Gods} peace among all people.

TODAYS READINGS First Reading They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy
(Psalm 123).

Second Reading I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel The people said: Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? (Mark 6:1-6). Let Saint Rita Be There For You . . .

If Someone In Your Family Becomes Seriously Ill

Please notify us (626.355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 626.355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.
