By: Imran Shaikh Fashion is a term usually used in a positive sense, as a synonym for glamour, beauty and style it is also applies to a prevailing mode of expression, but quite often applies to a personal mode of expression that may or may not apply to all. It's a way of celebrating the diversity and variety of the world in which we live. Fashion is about re-inventing the cultural heritage in an innovative way, which is necessary to keep life interesting. It's a way of measuring the mood that can be useful in many aspects, culturally, socially even psychologically. At the same time, fashion shouldn't be taken too seriously or you lose the fun of it. Fashion is something we deal with every day. Even people who say they don't care what they wear, they choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day. Fashion is a general term for a popular style or trend; especially in clothing, foot wear, or accessories, which make a package of ones outlook as well as to prevailing styles in behavior. But keep in mind; as soon as a fashion becomes Universal, it is out of date. Its a new era in fashion - there are no rules. Its all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together. Pakistani fashion industry has grown by leaps and bounds in latest decade. Many famous fashion designers are working in this field and contributing to the progress of the industry and economy of Pakistan. With opening of the new institutes and fashion schools our industry has found new horizons with new talent pouring in. Pakistani fashion industry has many endowed and creative fashion designers. Every fashion designer has new and creative ideas which make them distinguish from each other. Pakistani Fashion industry is striving to make identification of Pakistani culture on International fashion ramps. The culture of Pakistan has always been the focal point for most of the fashion designers. Whether it is dress or accessories, Pakistani fashion industry has always kept the aspect of pertaining to our traditional roots and rich heritage that are actually the main identity of Pakistan. The main focus of the Pakistani fashion industry nowadays is the fusion of South Asian and Central Asian fashion styles along with the delicacy of eastern touch. It is undoubtedly the hard work and exertions of Pakistani Fashion designers to introduce the pure eastern culture throughout the world.

Through the exclusive creations and attractive presentation of Pakistani Fashion industry, the fashion trends and culture of Pakistan gained appreciation and positive reception from many fashion events around the globe. In a broader view and unbiased analysis, the Pakistani fashion industry has certainly played a very constructive and positive role in building the fashion sense and fashion trends amongst all the age groups along with economic prosperity and creating employment opportunities. Pakistani culture and traditions always have a huge impact on Pakistani fashion industry and the collections of famous Pakistani fashion designers and experts have also tried to be unique and exclusive to use their imagination to design the unmatchable products, dresses and accessories. The creations and collections of Pakistani fashion industry, that are purely culture oriented, received warm applause and gratitude from the fashion ramps from all over the world especially the western countries. The basic intention behind promoting Pakistani culture and Pakistani fashion trends through products and dresses is to mark our individuality in the fashion industry worldwide, tied along with our tradition and style. The changing trend of fashion in Pakistan with every passing day has proved that Pakistani designers are unbeatable. Pakistan is fast emerging on the world textile map as an important exporter of quality Apparel, Cotton Textiles and other made-up goods. The industry is spending millions of dollars on increasing their production capacities and upgrading quality and capacity. The large textile industry complements the fashion industry. As the other fields in Pakistan, including entertainment, medicine and information technology, are building their own identification all over the world, our Pakistani fashion industry is also going higher with the dedication of Pakistani Fashion designers to mark their importance in the world of Fashion. Today it is one of the most progressing industries in the country and contributing towards the betterment of our economy. We have more than 300 registered garment exporters. Their fashion apparel has come into great demand in countries such as; US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Russian States and some other regions of the globe. The country exported approximately US $400 million worth of fashion apparel in the previous fiscal year. Despite the fierce competitiveness in the world market, we feel that Pakistan will further expand its share, and would like to see apparel exports become an even greater source of revenue.

Some Serious Thoughts on Fashion Wildness No doubt today it is one of the

most progressing industries in the country showing very promising prospects, influenced by external forces be they social, political, economic, technological or even competitive, which serve as a main driver for this industry. The serious aspect that needs the attention of the society as a whole and of those who have influence in some manner in our society; as some of our fashion designers and gurus of this industry, influenced/fascinated by West, are trying to invade our society with the Western culture and style. Most of our media is also promoting the same trend; the TV channels show various hosts, anchors and different characters in the dramas wearing westernized clothes. Even our Lux Style Awards depict the western style of dressing and decor. If and when confronted by a question on their approach tilted towards westernization and leaving behind our own cultural/religious values and heritage they come up with the argument Do you know what an important economic role this industry is playing? This argument is valid but we have to see at what cost?

A segment of our society feel pride to dress up whatever fashion becomes popular abroad, it is being adopted, without thinking that it is not meant for their body type or cultural values. Fashion is a very powerful element in the west; westernization is intruding into our culture, consequently the Islamic values and Adaabs are fading away. I do recognize that it is good to take inspirations from their designs; however, I think there has to be a fine balance. The obligations of a Muslim have long been forgotten and unfortunately no one is taking it seriously and no actions are being taken to stop this intrusion of westernization and to safeguard our own religious/ social values and heritage. I believe that we have a rich cultural heritage which is a great source of inspiration and creativity and we can produce the most contemporary fashion and trends with the fusion of other cultural trends but we must steadfast to promote our own rich cultural heritage with confidence. The factors and circumstances responsible for these changes could be; technological and scientific inventions, growth of urbanization and industrialization, expansion of commercial activities and international trade, changes in the economic structure of the country, the spread of so called liberalism resulting in the rise of a secular intelligentsia, the effect of the spread of different ideologies of different

political parties in the country, the impact of the highly developed countries of the world on our society, the working and influence of the trade union and co-operative movement, the expansion of the area reached by the mass media of communication, migration and finally cultural diffusion.
Changes are the spice of life, of course YES! It is true because everybody needs a change in whatever ones doing. We want changes around us; monotonous life just makes us feel bored. It is good to have a change but the important thing is; these changes must be positive. If we go for negative/wild ones then they will obviously have a negative impact upon our lives and on our society at large. Negative impacts are accountable for some more negative changes so we need to be assiduous in this regard. I feel that Pakistani fashion industry has started to be entrapped deeper into the web of western wildness (so called contemporary advancement) which dont suit to our social, moral and religious values. Remember Fashions fade away but Elegance is the only beauty that never fades, the beauty of a person doesnt lie in the clothes one wears, the figure that one carries, or the way one combs hairs. Dont make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live. The beauty of a person is seen in his/her eyes, because thats the doorway to ones heart, the place where beauty and love reside. True beauty in a person is reflected from ones soul. Its the caring that one lovingly gives, the passion that one shows and the beauty of a person only grows with passing years. So what is your point of view about this wildness?
