USING VSUAL MEDA N SCENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LESSONS: THE MPACT FOR 8TH GRADE STUDENTS ACHEVEMENT AND

PROSPECTIVE ON THE NATURE OF SCENCE

INTRODUCTION
Understanding the nature of science is one of the fundamental aims of science teaching. It is a fact that a lot of teaching practises are insufficient to achieve this aim or it has limited effects and new approaches are required while teaching the nature of science. Educational programs must meet the reqiurements for training wellqualified people who understand the Nature of Science and who are good scientific-literated people. Science indicates body of knowledge, method and way of knowing. Thus nature of science typically refers to the epistemology of science, science as a way of knowing, or the values and beliefs inherent to scientific knowledge and its development (Lederman, 2007). A deeper understanding of the conceptions of the nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an integral part of scientific literacy. Also, research findings consistently report that students do not embrace an adequate understanding of the NOS, resulting in a need for inclusion of the NOS in science courses. Science curricula in many countries now include notions of the NOS.

PARTICIPANTS
This study will be carried out an elementary school, located in Eskiehir, during the fall semester of 2012-2013 academic year. Sample of the study will compose of 100 elementary schoolstudents attending science course.

Use of Visual Media

RESULTS
In line with the research results, it will be proposed that not only quantitative studies including larger samples and examining students views about nature of science on different classes, departments, and courses, but also experimental studies considering each sub dimension of the achievement, awareness, interest toward science should be carried out.

METHODS
During the study, an experimental design with pretest-posttest matched control group will be used. Instruments will be devolopment by the researcher. Before and after the learning process views of nature of science questionnaire and achievement, awareness, interest toward science scale will be applied to the students in both groups as pre and post questionnaire. Additionally, structured interviews will be carried out with 8 students from only the experimental group. In the treatment groups, science teaching will be use of visiual media while NOS instruction in the comparison group for the same time interval will be done via lecture, demonstration and questioning strategies.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study examines the effect of using visual media during science course on 8 th grade elementary school students views of the nature of science, achievement, awareness and interest toward science.
