In the past, weve given away a number of performance products to some lucky readers, and this month weve got another great prize for one of you. Thanks to the generosity of TSW Wheels, were offering a set of its forged Nurburgring wheels to one of you. Its our experience that most people dont bother entering because they dont think they stand a chance. As a result, youd be surprised at how relatively few people bother to enter magazine competitions in general. Fortunately, ours are well subscribed but your chances of winning are still very high. And with this particular competition, the first 200 entrants get a TSW T-shirt as well, just to encourage your participation. Entry is very easy. You simply have to identify eight racetracks from the maps that are provided. I wont tell you how to find them but they may also be the name of some TSW wheels VIDZ As always, youll find a host of exclusive online videos at both eurotuner.com or youtube.com/eurotuner This month we have footage from the Brembo brake install on our Project M3, as well as from the dyno session for the VW CC where we installed an intake and exhaust. Finally, Sam got some video form the Continental tire test he attended in Germany, so take a look when youre online. Its all there, and most of it is in glorious HD. We update both our website and YouTube channel on a weekly and sometimes daily basis whenever possible, so why not subscribe and well alert you to any new videos online. You should also check out eurotuner.com for daily Euro news stories, event listings, desktop wallpapers, etc. W eve been having some heated discussions about the next project car to build for the magazine. Now that 2.slow is effectively completed (although more mods may follow), we wanted to replace it with another budget build. One of the recurring ideas is an old Porsche 911 possibly a 964 or 993. With so much being interchangeable on the different 911 models, its relatively easy to update an older model with modern exterior panels and running gear. The reason we havent dived in with both feet is because were worried these older Porsches (or any Porsche come to that) could be a money-pit. And while we can pull favors from friends and acquaintances to keep a car on the road and modify it, is this something the average reader could do? On the other hand, nearly every VW owner Ive ever met hankers after a 911, so it would be a great project to show people some of the pitfalls. To help us decide, weve chosen to do two things: the first was to track down the awesome RWB Porsches from Japan, as seen on this months cover. For any Euro owner, anybody with oil in their veins, this is about as good as it gets old-school 911s built like the race cars of their day, painted in modern colors, decked out with, modern wheels, but everything is then left slightly unfinished to give the cars an instant patina, extra character. Hopefully, youre like all of us who simply drool puddles of saliva whenever we see these cars. Our first encounter was at the Tokyo Auto Salon last year, but since then theyve been appearing in magazines and online regularly, inspiring us to dig a little deeper. The problem with contacting RWB is the lack of communication. The owner speaks no English and doesnt seem too bothered about whether or not people know about his cars. And somehow this just makes it even cooler. As a result, there are tons of photos of the cars but very little is really known about the company and its products. Hopefully, weve been able to add another piece to the jigsaw, and a snippet to the body of information about this incredible company. The second part of our voyage of 911 discovery is to have a 993 owner confess the reality of owning and modifying an older Porsche. While we imagine its all about canyon roads and giggling girls, the reality appears to be slightly different. Frequent and expensive maintenance appears to be the biggest obstacle to 911 ownership. So weve commissioned a story to expose the underbelly of the daily experience. That story will follow in a few months the car needs some work before we can photograph it! HERESY Speaking of the Japanese, we should apologize for the E-Shift story in this issue. In case you havent got there yet, its about a company that drops Japanese engines into perfectly fine German automobiles! Again we debated the merits of this story for months, finally deciding it was a relevant piece on the basis of its cheap tuning options and low-cost maintenance. Certainly one of the regular complaints from BMW owners is that its relatively expensive to tune their cars beyond the regular software, exhaust and intake. And while were hoping there isnt a huge rush of BMW owners wanting to transplant Toyota engines into their cars, it is an interesting option that can reach 500-600hp relatively easily, with 800hp possible on a stock block! So while the story will inevitably upset some BMW purists, understand that we were as dubious about it as anybody else, but we felt it was something the wider Euro community might like to know about. TIGER Since we know its difficult for everybody to afford the modified car of their dreams, we BEHIND THE WHEEL Greg Emmerson , Editor eurotuner@sorc.com EDITORS LETTER True PDF release: storemags & fantamag www.nm-eng.com 2010 APS, Inc. Firstly, is it legal to drive around with no hood? The shaved bay looks really cool, and I can understand why the owner would want to show it off, but is this legal? Does he get stopped by the police all the time? The second question, is how does he drive the car with his eyes shut? I guess hes just blinking in the photo, but it looks like hes sleeping. Will Cook email Check with your local police because it seems to vary by state. Some require a hood while others simply require working lights, wipers, bumper, etc. The owner spoke to his local police and its apparently legal in NJ, so he regularly drives the car without the hood. Trash I read your Editorial in et 8/10 but still threw the issue straight into the trash. Im a VW guy and would at least like to see some VW coverage in every issue. The all-Porsche, all-BMW, all anything is not for me. I have the same issue with European Car; Im a long time subscriber since the 80s when it was originally VW & Porsche magazine. But since ECs coverage of VWs has narrowed, and is directed at high-end cars of other makes I have had to look to other publications. So et was a breath a fresh air since most of the important VW parts advertisers had switched over from EC to et. However, the 8/10 issue had nothing for me and was a waste of my subscription money. Mike B52 email We understand your frustration at an all-BMW issue (weve never done a Porsche issue and probably never will) but imagine how the Audi, BMW, Mini, Saab, Volvo and Mercedes guys feel. Occasionally the Dubheads have to sacrifice for the greater good. And it was a cool issue if youre broadminded. Volove 1 I was wondering why you dont ever do an all-Volvo issue. It seems like all you do is VW and Audi. Dont get me wrong, I love the mag a lot; it keeps me in the loop with the Euro scene. But it seems like all the VWs and Audis look the same. Why is this? Kyle Higgins Tolleson, AZ Why do VAG products look the same, or why isnt there a Volvo issue? The former is a subjective statement based on a superficial reading of the Euro movement, the latter is an optimistic statement based on an unrealistic desire for more Scandanavian coverage. With 70% of our readers owning VWs, they will always dominate our coverage. Volove 2 I was wondering why dont you have many Volvos in your magazine? Theyre Euro and theres a following for them. Dont get me wrong, I love BMWs and really like VWs, but I own a Volvo S70 2.4L Turbo. Do you think there would be any articles in the future? I just subscribed because I like what you feature but there are more Euros than just VWs and BMWs. Ivan Tornetta email Weve featured a number of Volvos in the past, the 240 Race Wagon in et 7/10 being the most recent. VW Fund Spotted by our designer Alina Avanesyan while on vacation in Hawaii (no, we didnt know she was paid that much!) was this creative tips jar. Who could refuse a contribution to such a worthy cause? Brake After reading your Editorial about Toyotas unintended acceleration (et 6/10), I agree with you, on almost every point. The only problem is where you say theres no way an engine can overpower the brakes. While standing still, the engine cannot overpower the brakes, but once moving above a certain point this is no longer true. You will accomplish one of three things: glaze the brake pads, boil off the fluid or pulse the ABS until your foot is on the floor and theres no pressure in the brakes unless you pump the pedal. If youre like us old timers, where pumping the brakes was how you stopped in adverse conditions, this comes automatically, but younger drivers have no idea what it means, and in a panic situation most people just freeze, hence the explanation It just wouldnt stop. Any guy with two first names sounds suspicious, but then we looked at his garage project and our skepticism faded. Aaron started as a VW/Audi tech in 82, and joined VWoA five years later. In 04, he picked up a 94 Passat GLX VR6 wagon. I knew I wasnt going to leave the VR6 in the wagon, so I started looking for a suitable transplant car, he began. In 05, one of my co-workers was selling a 65 VW Notchback parts car. Its always been at the top of list of something I wanted to build, so we struck a deal. Once I got both cars home I started measuring. I was just going to use the VR6 in the Notch with the air-cooled running gear, but the limitation of the suspension, brakes and transmission, not T he countdown has begun, and with the 10 eurotuner GP about two months away, 034 Motorsport is wrapping up its rear-wheel drive, mid-engine Mk4 VW GTI project. The 01 hatchback is in the final stages of bodywork, with the fenders being shaped and smoothed for paint. Last month we saw the rear fenders widened 4'' on each side. The fronts were pulled 3'' each as well. Widened R32 bumpers are also being blended to flow with these fenders. The next step for 034 is to finish machining the 2.7-liter S4 motor, followed by installing the engine and six-speed 034 GOLF V6 Euro-spec transmission into the cradle. The turbo system and fueling has yet to be touched but 034 plans to run a single-turbo setup that can easily be swapped for track and dyno setups. Stay tuned for an update on the engine and turbo build next month. M ike Behman from PA is taking on an unusual project. He managed to locate this rare 82 BMW 323i TC Baur edition and plans to restore it with some upgrades. With only 54k miles on its odometer, the Euro-spec Cabrio already has Racing Dynamics springs matched to Bilstein shocks. Its also retained the factory dual exhaust, M-Technic gauge cluster and Recaro seats from an E21. This Winter, Mikes going to bring the car back to shape starting with the exterior. With the help of Green Street Fibre Werks, the team will fabricate custom molds for the hood and fenders. Mike is also going to widen the track with new wheels. After the bodyworks done, he hopes to paint it Alpine white. A new top for the Cabrio will either have to be sourced or fabricated, while chrome Euro bumpers should give the car an old-school look. BAUR POWER NOTCHBACK VR6 to mention rust, got me thinking about using all the Passat running gear and just keeping the Notchback body. More measuring and drawing ensued until Aaron had a mid-engined VR6 layout planned. He started cutting both cars, then built a chassis jig in his garage. The plan was to use the firewall and front floor section from the Passat to keep the front mounting points in place. So he used square tubing for the frame rails to tie the ends together. Aaron then outsourced an eight-point rollcage to complete the chassis. The car became an overnight sensation online and people were hungry for information. Judging by your emails, most of you were equally as curious but we bided our time until we could get a little more information on the company. The problem is, the reclusive owner speaks no English and hides from the spotlight. As a result, several stories have been written yet little is known. What we do know is that the small tuning shop has a big following. It specializes in transforming older Porsche 930 and 964 models into the craziest widebody cars imaginable, reminiscent of the mid-70s Porsche 934 prepared for Group 4 endurance GT racing. This was perhaps the pinnacle of 911 racing, where Porsche swept all before it, winning championships worldwide. These were also the cars that encapsulated the classic coke-bottle shape of the widebody Turbo cars that became the wall posters for generations of schoolboys. By rekindling the menace of these GT racers, Akira Nakai has achieved cult status for himself and his company. No two cars are exactly the same, with owners giving each a unique personality. Nakai-san remembers the moment he fell in love with speed. It was while watching an American movie aged 7. He saw a car tail-slide around a corner and it stirred something inside. Movies like the original Gone in 60 Seconds and The Cannonball Run brought images of the Eleanor Mustang and Lamborghini Countach into the young boys head. As a result, he now sleeps in the same workshop where he creates these amazing machines, claiming that waking up to the sight of his 911 inspires him for the rest of the day. The company was formed about 20 years ago in the building he still occupies. Its where customers become family and where he has become comfortable. The name Rauh-Welt Begriff is German and one of those interesting Japanese contrivances that doesnt translate directly into English. However, rauh means rough and welt means world. This represents the way Nakai likes to drive his Porsches, in a rough style, according to our translator. It also reflects the world he has shaped, where he does not seek perfection in his creations. Unlike most tuners, Nakai-san sees the flaws in each car as part of its character; the same way most of us view older cars, where the ritual of repairing faulty wiring or cajoling a stubborn starter motor brings you closer to the car. As a result, he builds the cars with rivets, tape and zipties, ignoring imperfections in search of the cars soul. For clarification, begriff is also German and translates into concept or idea. Were told Nakai-san selected it because he liked how it sounded with Rauh-Welt, and so the Rough-World Concept was born. 930 Even 20 years ago, Nakai preferred the older Porsche 911 models such as the legendary 930 (1974-89). So this is what he first drove and what he continues to drive today. And although the 930 was the first production car to use turbo technology, he rates the naturally- aspirated models over the legendary 911 Turbo, which established the 911 as the first modern supercar. His own matte-black 930 in our photos has a 3.8-liter motor on carbs to retain that period feel and the need for constant maintenance. It wears RWBs own 930 Racing widebody kit, as well as RWB suspension and massive SSR wheels in the same matte-black. Fitted with a full rollcage, racing seats and sliding windows, the interior is a web of loose wires for racing switches and gauges. With its bare floors, roof and doors, the owner could undoubtedly have created a tidier finish but PORSCHE 911 All RWB conversions use SSR wheels True PDF release: storemags & fantamag storemags & fantamag - magazines for all 30 eurotuner november wanted to remain true to his Rough World status. All RWB cars are dual-purpose; built for the street and track. Neither is more or less important, we were told. However, his greatest inspiration is from driving on the street. When he catches his cars reflection in a shop window, thats when he sees the car showcased. This response caught us off guard. Conventional wisdom suggests this sort of widebody conversion is dedicated to hardcore motorsport, but Akira Nakais honesty is disarming. He simply loves the way the cars look. In addition to his own parts, RWB also incorporates genuine Porsche parts, as well as tuning parts from the US. Nakai-san talked of his respect for the renowned European tuners such as Ruf, Gemballa, etc but doesnt appear to work with them. 964 The stunning green and orange 964 (89-94) models in our photos are two customer cars. I made the green Porsche for Toshiya Ichiraku, Nakai told us. He wanted to build a car like the latest 997 GT3 RS with his 964. And after I made that one, Mr Makabe liked it so we painted his 90 Carrera 2 in the GT3 RS orange! Both cars wear the Rauh-Welt 964 widebody and RWB suspension with 18'' SSR wheels. However, Toshis green 93 Carrera 2 has race-spec dampers along with a carbon interior and gold SSR wheels these are 18x10''front, 18x12'' rear with 265/35 and 295/35 Bridgestone tires, respectively. Although built for the track, Toshi uses the car as a daily-driver, preferring to take his wife to dinner or pick up his kids from school in the Viper green 964. I built it for a Hollywood movie, he confided. I would love to see an RWB Porsche in a movie, so I made this green 911 for that. I also wanted to make the older model look cooler than the 997 GT3 RS, he explained, and we think hes succeeded with that wish Toshi has known Nakai-san since they raced Porsches together in 1990, and he still has an RWB 930 for the track. They became friends and Toshi is now trying to help Rauh-Welt grow. So we asked him about the top Porsche tuners in Japan, and Toshi claimed RWB is undoubtedly best for bodywork. We also asked whether it was difficult to own a Porsche in Japan, surrounded by so many cheaper domestic options. His answer was typically and mysteriously Japanese: Its not easy to own one of these cars, but if you are a real man, you can do it. There is no word for it in Samurai Despite creating some of the coolest Euros on the planet, Nakai-san will work on other cars. Yet when he started drifting in a Toyota Corolla AE86 he painted it the same olive color as the awesome Ruf 911 BTR to maintain the Porsche connection. He lives and breathes Porsche, and is keen to expand his horizons, even offering to travel to any country where a customer wants to recreate one of his RWB Porsches. He also indicated he was particularly keen to tackle the latest 997 model. If nothing else, Rauh-Welt Begriff proves theres plenty of life in the older, cooler 911 models. Its good to see such a huge following for these iconic sports cars, which can be bought for bargain prices right now. Bagged n blue, the Mk4 was obviously destined for greatness with a big-turbo, rollcage, race seats and rare wheels. The madness continued with a shaved n airbrushed engine bay but we lost track of its development heading into the long winter months. After months of speculation, owner John Nichol resurfaced with one of the most exciting and well-executed daily-driven Mk4s in the country. Like many VW fanatics, the 26 year-old has been around European cars all his life. In fact, he lived in Germany as a kid. His first ride was an old Quantum Synchro; but his interests changed through high school and college. I got into Ford Broncos and trucks, John began. Then V-8 musclecars like my Camaro. It wasnt until I got together with Jeff Jacobson that I rediscovered VWs and started liking the Mk4 turbos. It was something I hadnt played with but I saw the horsepower numbers people were getting and knew I wanted some. Jeff should be familiar to you; he built the Low Life R32 turbo on the cover of et 4/09 and was Johns inspiration. When I met Jeff, I had the Camaro and two Passats. I got rid of the Chevy and was after a new car. Thats when I fell in love with the 20AE, especially in Jazz blue. Jeff persuaded me to testdrive one and loved it. I went on vacation for a week and when I came back the car was still for sale, so I made it happen, he smiled. The GTI already had a downpipe, intercooler and blow-off valve. Yet within a matter of days they were joined by a Forge turbo inlet pipe, Revo software, exhaust plus V-Maxx coilovers. I never was worried about the looks, but I kept wanting more power, he told us. I was introduced to Tristan Henderson from Further Performance, who helped me take the car to the next level. So I eventually bought a daily driver and decided to build the GTI. John periodically helped out at Further Performance with basic installation work. The experience gave him the confidence to tackle the more difficult tasks on his own car; the stance, for example. Ditching the budget coilovers, John sought more adjustability and comfort. So he pieced together an air-ride setup with Bagyard bags in the front with shortened Bilstein struts to achieve more low. The rear used AAC bags and the system was managed by an Auto Pilot digital controller. He mounted a five-gallon air tank and Viair 380c compressor in the spare tire well and notched the subframe to achieve a super-slammed stance. John was reluctant to ditch the factory Aristo wheels, demanding something special for their replacements. After online searching, he eventually came across rebuilt 18x8'' front and 18x9'' rear Zauber wheels. I loved the way they looked on the previous owners Mk4 Jetta, he explained. It had the perfect stance on air-ride and they were crazy-looking. I loved the step lip. The three-piece rims were stripped and re-polished, switching the bolts to copper. And since they were Japanese wheels, custom adapters adjusted them to the Mk4s bolt pattern. The rear wheels touch the fender but it has the perfect stance, he confirmed. Sometimes unnoticed behind the polished faces are Brembo front brakes utilizing 12.9'' drilled rotors and four-piston calipers, which would eventually come in handy when the car received more power. Bodywork was next but John confessed it was the worst part of the build. I almost packed up the projected, he remembered. Pleased with the OE 20AE front and rear valances, he bought supplies to mold them to the bumpers and shave the moldings. Unfortunately, the material he used was crap and created bubbles. After months of sanding and fixing, the bumpers were taken to Classics Fenders sit on 18'' Zauber wheels thanks to air-ride z True PDF release: storemags & fantamag eurotuner november 35 ENGINE: 1.8 liter 20v four-cylinder with 19mm Integrated Engineering rods, ARP head and main studs, port-matched head, polished 034 Motorsport large-port intake manifold, APR stage 3+ turbo kit with GT28RS turbo, cast inconel exhaust manifold, Bosch fuel pump, larger injectors, intake and 3'' downpipe, 2.5'' Magnaflow exhaust, evoms front-mount intercooler, APR R1 diverter valve, ECS Tuning pulleys, silicone intake hoses, polished fuel rail, Moroso polished catch can, smooth and polished Integrated Engineering Euro valve cover, braided lines with black AN-fittings, VF-Engineering motor mounts, OE Ferrari oil cap, shaved bay, engine block painted orange DRIVETRAIN: six-speed manual transmission with Southbend stage 3 clutch and lightened flywheel, Wavetrac 02M locker, trans painted grey BRAKES: 12.9'' Brembo Gran Turismo brake kit with four-piston calipers SUSPENSION: Bagyard front air bags with shortened Bilstein struts, AAC rear bags, Auto Pilot digital air management, five-gallon tank, 380c Viair compressor, notched subframe, Yarrow rear stress bar WHEELS & TIRES: 18x8'' front, 18x9'' rear Zauber wheels with 215/35 R18 front, 215/40 R18 rear Falken FK-452 tires EXTERIOR: molded front and rear valances, shaved rub strips, rear wiper delete with red power switch and removable key INTERIOR: Sparco Fighter seats, four-point harnesses and 383 suede steering wheel on quick-release hub, powdercoated Auto Power six-point rollcage, plaid headliner, New South Performance boost gauge, Auto Meter oil pressure gauge, Optima Yellow-Top battery, OE Ferrari shift knob, 42 Draft Design interior lighting THANKS: mom and dad, Jeff Jacobson, Peter Anderson at Further Performance, Ryan at Autotech, Kevin at AAC, Kris Clewell, Greg Tivadar and Bar Society, family and friends 2003 VW GTI 20th Anniversary Owner: John Nichol Location: Hopkins, MN Occupation: curator/facility mgr to Customs where they were color-matched. At this point, the GTI looked the business. Smoothed bumpers, air-ride and polished wheels distinguished it from other GTIs in the Midwest. But the limits were pushed further Over the next nine months, a plan was hatched to revamp the 1.8T. So the motor was pulled at Further and the block torn apart. It was strengthened with Integrated Engineering rods and secured with ARP studs. The head was also ported for good measure. With the block re-assembled, John painted it. The orange looked good with the blue and it almost resembled a Hemi, he noted. He spent several weeks polishing the 034 Motorsport intake manifold and Euro valve cover. Both pieces were fastened using copper hardware to coordinate with the wheels. The go-fast bits comprised an APR stage 3+ kit powered by a Garrett GT28RS turbo on a cast inconel manifold. A larger fuel pump and uprated injectors were also thrown in, along with an intake and 3'' downpipe. The kit was advertised by APR to produce Interior looks tough with Sparco seats and Auto Power rollcage storemags & fantamag - magazines for all 36 eurotuner november VW GTI 340hp and 320 lb-ft of torque; but Johns setup should dyno significantly higher with its additional parts. The stock six-speed manual received a Southbend stage 3 clutch and lightened flywheel, while a Wavetrac limited-slip improved traction. The transmission was re-sealed with ARP bolts and painted in a textured dark grey. With a 1.8T ready for war and an engine-less car sitting in his garage, it was time to shave the bay before refitting the motor. It really wasnt fun, he remembered. The worst part was removing the glue from the seams. Once it was out, it was easier to see where I wanted to go. I went crazy and removed all the brackets. From the coolant and power steering reservoirs to the battery, nearly every component was relocated. Every bracket was tossed except two on the strut towers, which John improved by making them bulkier and removing the bottom half. He also paid attention to the rain tray where the loom passes through. Theres a big gap, so I cut templates out of cardboard and transferred it to metal. Then I welded it to the firewall, he explained. Another daunting task was trimming the wiring harness and removing unnecessary ancillaries such as the EVAP system. After weeks of grinding, sanding and filling, the bay was smooth as a babys butt. The GTI returned to Classics to Customs where they sprayed the bay a single-stage flat gray. When I saw the empty bay, the spotwelds reminded me of an aircraft since my dad was an aviator for 20 years. Using this surge of inspiration, John airbrushed every spotweld to resemble aircraft rivets. He also painted jet intake beside the cone filter, like an airforce warning sign. The various themes were transferred to the interior, where a six-point Auto Power rollcage was installed. I wanted to see orange somewhere, so we coated the cage. Its now the first thing you see, he said. Powdercoating Technologies in Bloomington, MN created a custom color for this purpose. Next, he installed Sparco parts, including Fighter seats and the F1-style steering wheel with quick-release hub. For finishing touches, the headliner was upholstered in plaid cloth and a Ferrari shift knob added. When Spring 10 came around, the hot hatch was ready for the road. Not built as a show queen, the countless hours and sleepless nights paid off, creating an exceptional daily driver with speed, stance and style. John concluded, I had a lot of help from Further Performance, especially Peter Anderson their lead tech, who became a mentor to me. I also looked to my dad through the build, but Im happy I did the majority of the work. And every time I get in and drive the car, that happiness returns. Built like a jet, engine bay features flat grey paint, airbrushed rivets. 1.8T has APR big-turbo capable of 340+hp Air tank, compressor and Optima battery hidden in trunk True PDF release: storemags & fantamag storemags & fantamag - magazines for all 38 eurotuner november CHECKING OUT SOUTHERN WRTHERSEE 2010. Its growth has been explosive the original 07 meet drew less than 200 cars, but in 2010 that number mushroomed to over 800! What is it about SOWO that makes it popular? Lets start with what SOWO isnt: a competition. Yes there are awards, but not the typical judged classes. At SOWO, the participants decide their favorites. The idea of moving your family and belongings at high-speed and in comfort is universally respected. And probably the greatest wagon promoter of all is Audi, especially with its legendary RS2 and B5 RS4 models. These were wagon-only variants (known as Avant in Audi-speak) that could get your skis to the piste in record time. One of the most regular requests to the office is that we feature more wagons in the mag, but good ones only come along occasionally, and too often they sacrifice the luggage space that made them so versatile in the first place. But when we saw this A6 Avant TDI belonging to Marco Forstmann, we knew wed hit paydirt. The 34 year-old lives near Cologne, Germany and works in the petro-chemical industry. As a certified Dubhead, his first car was a Mk1 Golf, after which he graduated to a Mk3 VR6 and more recently built a Mk2 16v turbo. Apart from all being VWs, each was also repainted NATO green as Marco calls it. So when he needed something more practical, it was inevitable hed stick to type. He bought the 05 A6 Avant in 9/09, attracted to its big 2.7L V6 diesel motor. These are highly sought after in Europe for their fuel-sipping ability as much as their distance- swallowing 270 lb-ft at 1400rpm, 180hp and 33mpg (US, combined). I knew what Id do as soon as I bought it, Marco explained. Within five weeks, hed assembled a group of friends and completed the transformation to pimped lowrider and could get down to the serious business of turning heads. The speed of the conversion was largely thanks to a relatively new phenomenon; car wrapping. Where it used to take a paint shop weeks or months to do a color change, now vinyl can do the job in a day. And whats more, it can be removed if you want to change it, is easily repaired and there are some amazing custom finishes available. So once Marco had the grey car wrapped in his chosen matte green, he also had the Audi RS6 front grille surround wrapped in matte black, as well as all the chrome, the Audi Allroad door blades and the rear diffuser section. The next task was discovering the perfect stance. He achieved this with two crucial elements. The first was the GAS V1 air suspension from Melovan in Belgium. With some minor modifications to the front and rear subframes, Marco is able to lower his Avant into the weeds. He controls the system from a unit in the ashtray that instructs the Viair compressor to fill the two custom tanks mounted in the trunk. These were wrapped in the same green vinyl and live in the spare wheel well. The second element was the wheels. These are 20x9 Bentley items painted matte black and matte green to match the car. With their 41mm offset and identical bolt pattern, they simply bolted to the A6 without any problems. As his daily driver, Marco found one with the nicest possible interior, boasting stock leather and alcantara trim, GPS navigation and the MMI system. All he added is an Audi R8 steering wheel. The motor currently remains stock as well, although he hopes to upgrade the ECU software over the winter. So there you have it; an instant makeover that took the Avant from humdrum to thumbs-up. Its certainly inspiration for anybody trying to modify on a budget since a great deal was achieved with a few parts or somebody who needs to transport the family but still wants to make it in the Euro scene. Continuing the military theme: custom air tanks camouflaged in trunk Marcos weekend car is this 320hp Mk2 16v turbo. Interestingly, the aluminum hats on the OE floating rotors meant they were considerably lighter than previous E46 M3 parts, tipping the scales at just 10.17kg (22.48 lb), whereas the bigger Brembo rotors were 10.88kg. Although heavier, the advantage is well have a noticeable increase in thermal capacity, leading to lower operating temps and fade-free performance. Fortunately, we saved some weight with the calipers. The stock part with pads and line attached weighed in at 6.6kg, whereas the six-piston Brembo part with pads and line is only 5.34kg (11.8 lb) despite its massive size. With the heavier rotors equalized by the lighter calipers, theres no weight penalty fitting the Brembo parts. Apart from dissipating heat more effectively, the main advantage of the calipers six pistons is to distribute the braking force across the pads more evenly while improving pedal feel and modulation. The pads themselves are L ast month we began modifying our 2011 E90 M3 project car by installing a few carbon pieces from BMW Performance and Turner Motorsport. We had intended to install the last items this month until a friend at Race Technologies Brembos North American distributor told us they were looking for a car for an installation video The trap was laid, the bait taken; we have six-piston Brembo brakes on our M3. Sometimes this stuff is too easy! As a result, you can see our footage at eurotuner.com and youtube.com/eurotuner or a more indepth instructional video will be available from Race Technologies. Brembo has several options for the latest M3, and while we were obviously tempted by the more expensive 380mm kit, we chose the 365mm Brembo Gran Turismo Six-Piston Monobloc GT Kit. Admittedly, the 365x34mm rotors arent significantly bigger than the stock 360x32mm rotors, but theyre 2mm thicker and have 72 internal directional ventilation vanes rather than 48 on the stockers. These rotors were designed to approximately 60% bigger than stock, providing greater pad and rotor longevity. The extra force this allows you to exert, and the heat it can absorb should be reflected in significantly better high-speed braking power. We had a choice of red, yellow, black or silver calipers but opted for the trademark red, although black would have worked too, considering the stock rear calipers are still black. With the front brakes contributing up to 80% of a cars stopping force at speed, the stock rear brakes on the M3 are capable of matching the Brembo fronts. And with it being a new car, the components are performing at their best. So we werent too worried about neglecting the rear. Physically installing the brakes is relatively straightforward, but bleeding the fluid to ensure there are no air pockets is difficult. Failure to remove all the air could result in unresponsive brakes. If youre unsure of the procedure, consult an expert or have the brakes fitted by a specialty shop. Place clear brake hose over the two bleed nipples on one of the Brembo calipers and open the nipples a quarter turn. Gravity will pull fluid down the new line and into the caliper. When fluid appears in each hose, close the nipples. Now repeat this process on the other caliper. Always begin with the caliper furthest from the master cylinder. Once the brakes have been thoroughly bled, top up the reservoir again. Wash away any fluid spills around the calipers, wheel well or reservoir with soapy water because it can damage paint. If done incorrectly, your brakes will never perform properly and judder is likely to occur. With a new kit, start the process by braking gently at under 30mph to remove the anti-rust zinc coating on the rotors. Building up heat too quickly can deposit zinc on the pads or leave it unevenly on the rotor, leading to judder. The bed-in process recommended by Brembo is to perform at least 30 light/medium brake applications, each of 3sec duration and half a mile apart. The idea is to gradually increase component temperature without inducing thermal shock, to bed the pads into the rotors. Its best to do this away from traffic, as proved by the upset Prius driver during our attempt! Dont brake to a stop during this initial phase, and drive for several miles once completed in order to cool the components. They should now be good to go, the pedal should be firm, the stopping consistent. If not, consult a technician. Dont cut corners or take chances with your brakes. IMPRESSIONS One thing we noticed off the bat was that BMW provided a top-notch OE braking system off the showroom floor, one that will be more than sufficient for 80% of drivers. Realizing were in the 20 th percentile who demand more from our brakes in canyons and at track days, its good to know Brembos engineers identified the areas for improvement. Our brakes will outperform the OE system on the street, in the mountains, or at the track, and give us greater margins in the event of an emergency. Furthermore, pedal feel is better and theres the benefit of not needing to replace brake pads and rotors as frequently. The owner most likely had built a handful of VWs in the past and was probably in his early 30s. He might daily-drive a late- model GTI or A4 while this 1.8T-powered Jetta was a weekend toy he took to shows or church. But we were so wrong The gentleman you see peeling out is Gab Pelissier from Quebec, Canada. Hes a 19 year-old student who just finished building the first car he ever wanted, owned and drove. With such a well-balanced, gorgeous piece of machinery, youd never imagine it was modded by a minor. In fact, the Jetta is even seven years older than the owner, making us wonder why Gab chose the Mk1. I like older cars and wanted to be original or different. Ive actually wanted a Mk1 Jetta since I was 15 but it took two years to find the right car, he explained. While his buddies were picking up Mk4 and Mk5s, Gab saved his pennies for a vehicle with age and experience. Like a young man finding the perfect cougar, Gab fell in love when he encountered this unmolested 84 Jetta at the tender age of 17. Gab drove the car completely stock for a month, creating a gameplan for the winter. The plan was simple keep the old school flavor but give it the power it deserved Having matured more than 20 years, the car was showing its age. Gab didnt want a show car, but wanted to update it with enough new parts to make it a comfortable yet appealing daily cruiser. The exterior received a Rabbit front- end. To do this, he added the grille, round headlights, fenders, hood and radiator support. Euro bumpers were also installed to achieve the classic European flavor, along with a duckbill front spoiler. The interior followed next, with Gab ditching the aged seats for electric Recaro Trophys from a Mk2. A Porsche steering wheel improved both the feel and style of the cabin. Once the beauty elements were done, Gab focused on improving the Jettas performance, handling and stance. Still on a students budget, he installed V-Maxx coilovers with a front sway bar to both improve handling and get a super-low ride height. Brakes followed, with a rear disc conversion from a Mk3 Golf. He didnt hold back on wheels however, knowing they were vital to the outcome of his project. They were small and wide to gives a nice stretch. There also arent many wheels like this, he told us. The 14x9'' rollers were mounted with skinny 195/45 R14 Toyo T1Rs. And to personalize the wheels, Gab had a machine shop fabricate custom spike center caps. T he teenager tackled the powertrain last. With options such as a 2.0L, VR6 or 1.8T, he eventually chose the 20v motor for its combination of power and weight. It also allowed Gab the option for more tuning down the line with big-turbo options. He sourced virtually all the components from a 03 GTI, including the AWP four-cylinder engine, 02J five-speed manual transmission, radiator and wiring harness. There was enough room for the 1.8T to fit within the confines of the engine bay but custom mounts had to be fabricated. All the piping for the exhaust, downpipe and intercooler were also custom-made. However, adapting the shifter linkage to fit the 02J transmission as well as installing the Mk4 wiring harness were probably the trickiest aspects. Once the engine was running, the ECU was flashed with Unitronic software to maximize power and torque. Although its not been dynoed, this combination should give a healthy 235hp at the crank on 93-octane. Gab also found that swapping the motor wasnt the most time-consuming part of the project; tracing all the annoying rattles and ironing out the bugs was far more frustrating. Some remedies included new bushings, brakes, floorpan, seats and the motor. Fortunately, he reports the car now runs like a star and has become a reliable daily vehicle. My parents helped push me. And while older people usually have the money to do a big project, I just had to keep persevering, Gab concluded. Future plans include a rear-seat delete, rollcage and big-turbo, but for now the teenager is content. Inevitably, we were rather curious about what could be extracted from the familiar 2.0TSI engine in this application, so took a first crack at a CC 2.0T auto with Euro Sport Accessories in Anaheim, CA. In et 1/10, we fitted Euro Sports own 3'' downpipe and GIAC software, yielding close to 15hp and 45 lb-ft increase. With those impressive numbers as a starting point, we were looking for more power combined with a sweeter exhaust note. So we opted for a stainless steel exhaust and short ram intake that werent available for the CC during our first attempt. Since then, Euro Sport has developed a short-ram intake system. It fits almost every 2.0T application thanks to an almost identical layout spanning all the models. With minimal expectations for power increases, we were surprised to see almost 5hp and 4.5 lb-ft increases at peak, with more under the curves. These were strong numbers for such an affordable, DIY upgrade and surprising since wed failed to find such significant gains with our 06 Jetta GLI 2.0T FSI (et 9/06) in previous dyno tests. There still appear to be relatively few affordable exhaust options for the CC but a call to Techtonics Tuning (TT) revealed VWs part numbers for its Passat and CC exhausts were identical. Therefore, it seemed reasonable to conclude that Techtonics Passat exhaust should fit this application as well. We were sent TTs stainless steel system with Borla muffler, hoping it would fit. Once on the car, it was evident the bends were right, but the system was approximately 2'' too long to mate with the downpipe. You could cut either the downpipe or system to make it fit. Euro Sport opted to cut its own downpipe since they had spares if it went wrong, but if you had a stock downpipe, it might be safer to cut the aftermarket system. Either way, after a quick cut and welding the downpipe tube, it mated right up. Again, we werent sure what to expect from the exhaust but were delighted with around 2.5hp and 5 lb-ft gains at peak over the intake numbers. It also had a noticeably deeper, throaty exhaust note that gave the car more of an attitude. Overall, were very pleased to drive away with around 8hp and 9 lb-ft more at peak. Theres also the visual improvement of the polished exhaust tips and intake under the hood for bragging rights. There are further plans for the CC in the coming months, possibly including a K04 turbo upgrade from AWE Tuning, so stay tuned. Remove the 5mm allen bolt on the airbox mount. Disconnect the snorkel from airbox and pull the box from its rubber mounts. Then remove the two Philips screws securing the MAF and refit it to the inlet tube with the original spring clamp. Connect the supplied silicone hose to the other side of the MAF using the hose clamp provided. Connect the Euro Sport intake tube to the other end of the silicone hose and clamp. Then mount the ITG filter to the end of the intake tube. Youll need to fit a rubber cap over the hole in the intake tube for the CC, and the supplied rubber bushing into the mounting point on the car. Place the intake tube over the mount and tighten 10mm nut. Reconnect the MAF plug and fit the snorkel to provide airflow. EXHAUST FITTING To remove the OE exhaust, you need to cut it after the first resonator (look for three dimples) you may also need to remove the sway bar to do this. Then undo the two 13mm clamps from the downpipe and remove the system from its four hangers. The exhaust will then slide out of the downpipe. When fitting the Techtonics system, there was a 2'' overlap so we cut the downpipe to fit. Once done, slide the supplied sleeve onto the downpipe and secure with stock clamp. Then lube center section of TT system and clamp to the other side of the sleeve. Lube the other end of the center section and slide on the muffler. Before fitting the exhaust, the TT hangers need washers fitted. These comprise circular washers and small clamps. The washers dictate where the hanging rubbers will sit and prevent them sliding off. Install the inside washers first, hang the exhaust from the rubbers, then fit the second washer and clamp it in place, securing the rubber in between. You can move the washers along the hanger to aid final alignment. 1 1 2 2 4 4 5 3 3 The blue line shows power and torque for CC 2.0T with Euro Sport downpipe and GIAC software. What on earth were they thinking? It wasnt until Mike Miranda from E-Shift Performance in Keyport, NJ explained the foundation of his concept that we were finally able to stop hyperventilating. Established ten years ago, the company has a successful business modifying imports such as the Supra, RX-7 and 300ZX. A substantial part of their time is spent swapping the Supras 2JZ 3.0L six-cylinder twin-turbo motor into cars such as the RX-7, 240SX and even into older Supras. And this is what theyd still be doing but for one fateful day Wayne Henry is Mikes partner in the firm. In fact, theyve built about 15 cars over the past two years, with cars shipping in from as far as Florida and Arizona. So theyre in the process of creating conversion kits under their Crossbreed brand for the E39 5-Series, with E30, E36 and E46 kits ready to go. While we recoiled in horror at the prospect, Mike made a compelling argument: The 2JZ is a very affordable engine thats both strong and reliable, and maintenance is significantly cheaper than a BMW engine. With very little tuning you can get 500hp from them, up to 800hp from the stock block. Whats more, were getting about 350-375hp in virtually stock form, and theyll even return better fuel economy than the M5 motor if you stay off-boost. At this point, we naturally covered our ears and ran away screaming. A typical conversion costs $6000-7000 depending on the donor motor but the majority of customers are spending $10-15k with engine and chassis tuning, Mike told us. Clearly, the ease of tuning is a major appeal of this conversion. With engines imported from Japan, the cheapest option is a 2JZ with an auto transmission. These sell for around $2000 and are a great starting point. You can even upgrade to a five-speed manual for about $500-600. However, engines with the desirable six-speed cost around $5000 because thats the one everybody wants. Once youve chosen your weapon, E-Shift supply the engine and transmission mounts as well as the driveshaft. Physically getting the motor into the car is the easy bit. Theres lots of space in the engine bay for the twin-turbo motor. The problem is with the wiring, Mike continued. The company has currently developed two solutions. For older BMWs with OBD1 Bosch Motronic ECUs, E-Shift can mate the BMW wiring to the Toyota ECU to run the engine and ancillaries. The later OBD2 BMWs are more complex, however, requiring the Bosch ECU to run the ABS, A/C, speedo, etc, while a tandem Toyota ECU controls the engine. The convenience of this solution is the car retains all its major functions. The only sacrifice is the on-board trip computer, which is a small price to pay. The engine swap requires additional components such as a new exhaust, intake, custom intercooler and Walbro 255 lph fuel pump. These minor mods, along with dyno tuning, increase boost pressure slightly to realize the quoted 350-375hp. This level of power is certainly appreciated in an E30 or E36 325i chassis, but Mike stressed its the tip of the iceberg. In addition to the parts listed above, the E36 shop car seen here was treated to a E36 325i has M3 bumper plus custom paint and pulled fenders to clear huge 18x10'' Work rear wheels, needed to aid traction Fitted with a single Turbonetics turbo, the 2JZ engine in the 325i puts out 517whp on pump gas, 610 with a dash of C16 True PDF release: storemags & fantamag eurotuner november 67 custom E-Shift Turbonectics T72 single-turbo, GReddy wastegate and BOV, HKS 264 cams and a Mishimoto radiator. The result is a consistent and very entertaining 517whp at 17psi on 93-octane. Mixing in some C16 race gas allows us to run 22psi and get 610whp, Mike laughed. When the stock diff broke after a few launches an M3 LSD was installed, while StopTech big-brakes were also deemed necessary. They added an M3 spoiler and lighting before pulling the fenders to house 18x8.5/10'' Work wheels. A custom pearl paint job was then executed by Teds Collision in Keyport. SINNER Installing a Toyota engine in a worn-out 325i is one thing, but removing the 400hp 5.0 V8 from an E39 M5 is certifiable, maybe punishable by imprisonment, especially when owner Ed Mui admitted there was nothing wrong with the motor! I purchased the car in 11/07 as a daily driver in Manhattan and vowed to keep it stock, he said. Inevitably he started adding parts but it was the constant and expensive maintenance that took its toll. Being around E-shift and all the 1JZ- and 2JZ-powered cars, I figured I couldve spent all the maintenance dollars on mods if it were a Japanese import, he continued. After spending several grand on the car, I didnt even have any performance mods. So I started looking at prices and while everything would cost over $10k, I was disappointed to discover they wouldnt increase the M5s power by even 100whp. And with E-shift already doing several successful swaps, I thought why not the M5? For many of us, this might induce vomiting but Ed was convinced it was a good idea. It seemed like an affordable option, with very high power as the major advantage, he said. Selling the M5 motor and trans to fund the project, he only laid down an extra $10k for his 2JZ with six-speed and to build the engine to almost identical spec as the 325i above, with the exception of a Garrett GT35-R .82 AR turbo the preferred option for E-Shift. The electronics utilize the tandem ECU solution mentioned above, which has allowed Ed to keep the M5s functionality, while enjoying power in the region of 550hp and reduced maintenance costs. Additional mods include KW V3 coilovers, 19x9/10 Beyern wheels plus a carbon splitter and grilles. The owner plans to carry out additional work as his budget allows. While were obviously having some fun at the prospect of swapping a BMW engine for a Toyota, its clearly a conversion that appeals to a group of people. When we first started posting on BMW forums, there were inevitably plenty of haters, Mike admitted. But once somebody sits in the car and tries it, theyre usually won over. And there are people who like the idea of reliable power at a good price with cheaper servicing. If youre interested, enter E-Shift Performance into YouTube and see these monsters in action. Theyre also continuing to work on the conversion kits this will provide the major parts to carry out the swap yourself. You will need to send your BMW engine wiring harness to E-Shift, but theyll return it mated to the Supra loom, and will give you tech advice over the phone to help with the installation. After winter months collecting parts and building projects, everybody is eager to bring out their European automobiles and show off the fruits of their labor. Port Townsend, WA has graciously played host for the last six years as members of the Northwest Euro community invade their quiet town. This year, participants also pulled together to collect an astonishing 1600 lb of food for NW Harvest, a non-profit organization supporting food banks in Washington state. Previous events indicated that the growing number of participants would make planning the annual Port Townsend Cruise more of a challenge. But with the help of VW/Audi specialists Achtuning and the car care pros at Griots Garage, the 2010 event couldnt have gone smoother. Griots opened shop Sunday morning to allow attendees plenty of parking space while Achtuning handed out directions and parking passes. At Port Townsend, Achtuning had rented Memorial Field, the towns baseball stadium for parking and a comfortable tailgating environment on the lush grass. This years event was reportedly the largest automotive gathering the City had ever seen. The cruise turned show n shine, also provided plenty of eye candy and socializing opportunities for both the participants and residents, as a variety of Audis, BMWs, Mercedes, Volvos, Porsches and VWs were proudly displayed throughout Memorial Field. The town itself is also great to visit, with plenty of attractions to keep everybody entertained. Achtuning will continue kick-starting each season with the Port Townsend Cruise. It shares much of the technology in the four-door A4, so tuning options are plentiful, but it gives Audi enthusiasts something new to play with. Ian Keith Coyco liked the A5s fresh styling cues enough to become the first person in his neighborhood to drive and modify one, which coincidently is the first weve ever featured. Working as an IT technician in Los Angeles, Ian had previously built two Hondas, including a track-prepared Del Sol. I was getting older and wanted to step away from the import scene, he began. I was looking for a two-door. I didnt even know the A5 existed until I went to the Audi dealer when the car was still new. Ian drove this Ibis white 09 A5 home off the showroom floor. It didnt even matter that the 3.2 liter V6 FSI quattro was the only trim level available a 2.0T would have offered more tuning options and saved him a few bucks, but he wasnt worried. After running the Del Sol, I didnt want anymore engine problems, so Ive stayed away from the WORDS & PHOTOS SAM DU motor, he admitted. Regardless, the 265hp, 243 lb-ft V6 has served him well. Without popping the hood, Ian installed an Eisenmann quad exhaust to gain a more pronounced growl, as well as a Sprint Booster for better throttle response. The project would focus on cosmetics, with Ian gathering advice from friends to plan the changes. Addressing the chassis, the coupe was lowered by KW coilovers. Friend Eric Valdez then helped choose the perfect set of wheels, selecting 20'' HRE 590Rs mounted with Toyo tires. The mesh design and brushed finish of the dubs increased the A5s sportiness without detracting from its elegance. Additionally, Ian replaced the factory brakes with 15'' Brembo slotted rotors and six-piston calipers for the ultimate anchorage. Next, M1 Autobody in El Monte, CA sourced a Rieger body kit from Germany and color-matched it. The stock front bumper was graced with a lip spoiler and splitter, while the sides received deeper skirts with contrasting black accents. Almost finished, Ian wanted something to give the car the wow factor, especially being part of competitive car club Over Rev. So he sought the expertise of Audio Xcellence in City of Industry, CA. To go with the exterior, you might imagine Ian would opt for a restrained audio system. But the installer decided to take it in a different direction and go for glory. A white suede subwoofer enclosure was fabricated, housing two 15'' Rockfod Fosgate subs firing into the cabin. Then a custom kick panel was fitted with 5.25'' two-way components. Two amps located on either side of the trunk walls powered the system, and the icing on the cake was two 8'' LCD monitors in the sunvisor locations. WORDS & PHOTOS SAM DU focused on physically testing it to ensure the tire was better than its predecessors in every aspect whether it was wet or dry, handling, braking, tread wear or noise. However, the focus was increasing overall grip, so the engineers infused many new features like these: Tire Compound. Theres a new carbon resin compound called Black Chili Technology. Initially introduced in its sportbike and bicycle tires, the compound uses polymers that are reinforced with tiny nano-particles to make the tire extremely flexible. Like eating a chili, the compound heats up quickly, allowing it to become supple, producing an enlarged contact patch that allows more grip and stability. Tread Design. The CSC5P has an asymmetric tread pattern that features sturdier center ribs to minimize tread movement during extreme maneuvers. On either side of the rib are tread blocks with more grooves to give it a bigger footprint. These small blocks are interlocked and feature special chambers to disperse water faster. The result is more traction and W e shouldnt need to tell you, but tires are the most important aftermarket purchase youll ever make. Having good traction not only shaves seconds off lap times, but the improved responses and shorter braking distances can save your life. As enthusiasts, we spend so much time thinking about ways to make our Euros accelerate faster, we often neglect the simplest way to improve performance and safety. And this is where Continental Tire comes into play As an OE and aftermarket tire supplier, they understand what drivers need. Constantly evolving it products, the new ContiSportContact 5P (CSC5P) has been raved about in Europe as the best street tire available, so we jumped on a plane across the Atlantic to put them to the test. TIRE TECH Continental doesnt need much introduction. Weve marveled at its ContiSportContact3 street tires for the last couple of years in our Tuner GP. Conti also won Best Overall Tire in our 09 tire test with its Extreme DW. And the CSC5P is the culmination of these previous-gen products. Three years ago, Continental was developing its next ContiSportContact. For the first year, engineers used simulators to design the tire. The following two years sharper steering response in wet and dry conditions. Hybrid Structure. When developing a tires internal structure, theres an equilibrium that dictates grip and rolling resistance. The CSC5P has twin steel belts reinforced with a mixture of synthetic aramid fiber and nylon to enhance ride quality while not jeopardizing performance. A Conti engineer told us that the CSC5P is 15-20% better than the CSC3 in areas such as steering response. The tire will carry a high 240-tread wear rating (meaning it should last well) and cater towards later-model performance cars. EUROPEAN VACATION In the summer, we visited Continentals Contidrom test facility outside Hanover, Germany. The testing grounds include a high-speed oval, sprinkler-infested wet track, fun-sized dry circuit and off-road course. Upon arrival, we quickly got behind the wheel to assess the CSC5P. With countless journalists awaiting the same opportunity, we only had 15 minutes to push the limits in a set of tight slaloms, long-sweepers and fast straightaways. Because we were having so much fun, Conti took us off the track where we started to realize the information Conti gave us was true: the CSC5Ps gripped like glue, providing phenomenal driver feedback and great confidence. The tires also held up surprisingly well after eight hours of abuse, with other journalists reporting the same experience despite 90 temperatures. Next was the wet handling course, where we had the forbidden pleasure of driving a 10 Ford Focus RS 305hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, its the hot hatch America should have and was pure bliss. Matched with 235/35 R19 CSC5Ps, we swore the FWD five-cylinder Ford felt like an AWD car, with the traction and stability it gave on the soaked test track. The tires were very forgiving when we pushed them to slide, regaining grip with little steering input. Conti rounded off the day with an emergency braking test on wet pavement. We did a full ABS stop from 60mph in Opel Insignias one equipped with Contis and the other with less expensive Korean-made tires. It was a no brainer; the Contis stopped on a dime, while the competitor slid more than a car length further. Theres no question the new CSC 5P is a top-notch tire. Even OEs recognize this, with Mercedes fitting all its AMG cars with the Contis, as well as Audi on its TT RS. Perhaps the only setbacks are limited sizes and price. When the tire goes on sale in North America this autumn, sizes will range from 18-23'' and prices are forecasted to be higher than its competitors. But you get what you pay for Continental has proven the CSC5P raises the bar, providing more grip, stability and confidence than ever before in a street tire. MISSED YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE CAR?
