The following tutorial provides a step-by-step demonstration of the essential toolbar functions and menus required to creatively develop

a academic/writing journal in MS Word. Upon completion of the tutorial, a journal assessment activity is offered . A Glossary of Terms is also provided for students requiring additional explanations of the toolbar function and menu guidelines provided throughout the tutorial. Creating An Academic Journal

Learning Objectives

Identify the purpose and objective of an academic/writing journal. Create an electronic document that may be helpful in demonstrating your comprehension of course topics and objectives. Create a document that may be utilized to electronically link to library database resources, tutorials, and guides, etc. Create an electronic tool that identifies and tracks academic goals and accomplishments. Create an electronic tool that will be a useful resource for future courses, interviews, etc.

The purpose of your academic journal is to provide you with an electronic tool that helps you identify and track your academic and writing strengths, weaknesses, and accomplishments. Your journal may also be used as a tool to help strengthen your grammar and other writing skills. In addition, your journal may be utilized as a vehicle to electronically link to useful academic databases, tutorials, guides, and other useful resources. Upon completion of this tutorial, a practice journal activity is offered. The activity is designed specifically to provide you with an opportunity to assess your MS Word and journal development skills.

About Your Journal

Before creating your academic journal in MS Word, it is vital that you first familiarize yourself with the Title Bar, Status Bar, Scroll Bar, Menu Toolbar, and Formatting Toolbar functions required to develop your journal. Creating a journal in MS Word is easy as 123. when you take the following simple steps: To create a journal in MS Word, simply click the File Tab on the Menu Toolbar at the top of your screen. Click New located on the left side bar and begin a new document.
1. Click the File Tab on the Menu Bar.

Use the Scroll Bar Arrows on the Scroll Bar to scroll down and select the book Template of your choice. Once you have selected your desired booklet, a downloadable larger version of the booklet will appear in the right hand window. You may double click the larger image or simply click the download button to access your selected book.

Save your book by clicking File Save As located at the top of your Menu Toolbar. Title your journal and type its time in the File name box and saving it on your computer, disk, or flash drive.

Modifying Text You can customize your journal by creatively inserting and modifying text. To modify your journals text, go to the Formatting Toolbar at the top of your screen and review the various options for fonts, styles, size, color, etc.,

Modifying Font Styles To modify your journals text and change its Font Formatting, highlight the text you wish to change. Frequently, the Default Font is Times New Roman as shown below. You can change the font style from Times New Roman to Arial, Calibri, or other style by clicking the down arrow for the font, click the Font you wish to use. Next, you can change your Font Style from regular to bold (B), italic (I), underline(U) Arial, Calibri, etc. by clicking the tabs on the Format Toolbar.

For additional Font Styles, click the down arrow next to the Font Option on the Format Toolbar.

Modifying Font Size To change the font size of your text, highlight the text you wish to change. Click the down arrow next to the size on the format bar. Frequently, the default size is 12, as shown in the above example. Clicking the down arrow for the font to view the selection of various font sizes available. Optionally, if you do not have any text to highlight or choose to type text in a another size, move your cursor to the place where you would like your different text, click the down arrow on the size option and choose the text size you desire.

For additional font sizes, click the down arrow next to the Size Option on the Format Toolbar.

Modifying Font Color To change the font color of your journals text, highlight the text you wish to change the color of your text. Click the down arrow next to the color icon as shown in the above example. Usually, the icon is letter A with a red underline. After clicking the down arrow for the color, select the Theme Color you wish to make the text. If you do not have any text to highlight or wish to type text in a different color, move the cursor to the location of where you want to new text, click the down arrow on the font color option on the formatting toolbar and select the color you wish to modify.
To access additional Theme Colors, click the down arrow on the Format Toolbar.

Inserting WordArt For additional creative text options, go to the Drawing Toolbar to insert WordArt into your into journal. Simply click the WordArt icon on the Drawing Toolbar to display the Word Art Gallery and double-click a WordArt Style of your choice.

Inserting Images From MS Word Clip Art

You can also customize your journal by inserting images into the document. You can insert images into your document using two different approaches. First, you can (1) go to File and click Insert Clip Art or Pictures and the Picture Toolbar will appear.
1. On the Insert Tab, Click Clip Art.

2. In the Clip Art task pane, in the Search for text box, type a word or phrase that describes the clip art that you want, or type in all or some of the filename of the clip art.

3. Click Go. 4. In the list of results, click the Clip Art to insert it.

Inserting Images From a Scanner or Camera

You can also insert a picture from your scanner or camera and paste it into your journal. To insert an image from your scanner or camera, use the software that came with your scanner or camera to transfer the picture to your computer.
First, click where you want to insert the picture in your document. On the Insert tab, click Picture to access the Picture Toolbar. Find the picture you would like to insert, double-click the picture, and insert it into your journal.

Inserting Images From a Web page


Want to insert a picture from a Web page and paste them into your journal? From the Web page of your choice, drag the picture that you want into your journal. Make certain that your selected image is not a link to different Web page. Once you drag the linked image, it will be inserted in your journal as a Link instead of an image. Before inserting pictures and information from outside Web page, be sure to first review the sites copyright guidelines. Resizing Images Finally, you can increase or decrease the size of your picture by selecting the picture you've inserted and dragging a Sizing Handle away from or toward the center of the image. Be sure to keep the center of your picture in the same location by pressing and holding CTRL while dragging the sizing handle. You can maintain the pictures proportions by pressing and holding SHIFT while dragging the sizing handle. If you want to both maintain the pictures proportions and keep its center in the same location, simply drag the sizing handle while pressing and holding both the CTRL and SHIFT keys.

One of the most effective strategies I have for improving my writing is to step away from my written essay, come back to it a later time, and read it as if it was the first time. I may also ask someone else to read my essay and give feedback. In addition, I have considered joining a peer group where everyone exchanges essays and provide suggestions for improvement.

Academic Journal Clip Art Default Font Drawing Toolbar An electronic document designed to help students identify academic accomplishments and track helpful database resources . Clip Art is a gallery of pre-designed images that can be placed within your journal.. Default or standard fonts are fonts that are automatically set in MS Word. The Drawing toolbar is used to create Clip Art and WordArt. You can also create lines, shapes, text boxes, and, AutoShapes using the Drawing Toolbar. Font style denotes the specific characteristics of a font. Font style characteristics may include italic, bold, bold italic, and roman. The Formatting toolbar provides various choices for formatting a selection of text. Some choices consist of, font, font size, font weight, and color. To format a font is to modify a texts appearance. For example, a texts appearance may be modified by changing its font style (bolding, centering, and underlining), point size (11 pt.), and font typeface (Arial). A link is a word, expression, or image that may be entered into your journal by click on to jump to a Web page, new document, or a new section within the same document. Text hyperlinks are often blue and underlined. A menu bar is a horizontal bar that is comprised of various menu items and options. Some items and options include, the File menu (including options such as Save and Open File.., the Edit menu (including options such as Undo, Copy, Paste, and Select All, and the View menu (including options such as changing the layout of open windows). The Picture toolbar is comprised of buttons that may be used to format your selected picture. The toolbar may be accessed from the Formatting toolbar.

Scroll Bar Scroll Bar Arrows Within the MS Word Window, the scroll bar is a panel for moving a display vertically or horizontally. Positioned at the ends of the scroll bars, the scroll bar arrows may be clicked to move the view up, down, or across within a window.

Sizing Handle

When resizing an image, the sizing handle may appear as small circles or squares that appear at the sides or corners and sides of the image. Resize your image by dragging the handles .
The Standard Toolbar is a bar of icons positioned below the screens menu bar. The toolbar provides access to file operations, printing, data block movement, and the undo system The Standard Toolbar also permits you to create a new file, Open an existing file, Save the current worksheet to disc, Print the current worksheet or workbook to a file or a printer, Cut, Copy, paste, Insert a hyperlink. Other menu options include Insert, Format, and Font. Located at the bottom of the window, the status bar contains information about many formatting options such as current font, insert and overtype mode, and page number. A template is a preformatted document that serves as a model for other documents. Templates include common formats such as addresses and date entries and allow you to create professional looking letters, memos, reports, and other documents easily. Theme colors are a wide range of additional colors that may be applied to fonts when formatting documents. The title bar shows you the name of the current document and contains the standard Windows control buttons. WordArt is a decorative text that may be added to your journal by clicking the WordArt Icon and accessing the WordArt Gallery. A Gallery of decorative text in a variety of font sizes, styles and colors. The working screen is the application that opens when you initially open MS Word. to The working screen is comprised of the document window, application window, and tools for utilizing MS Word.
