What is Recreation?
Recreation is about activities, pastimes, and experiences which are freely chosen. They are usually undertaken in free time and produce feelings of well being, fulfilment, enjoyment, relaxation and satisfaction.

Why is Recreation Important?


o Promoting physical fitness and health, o Developing the spirit of teamwork and fair play, o Building feelings of accomplishment, self-fulfillment and selfexpression, o Offering worthwhile uses of leisure time that provide long-term satisfaction, o Developing useful skills, mental abilities and creativity, o Providing enjoyable social experiences, o Promoting wholesome activities for youth. o Providing oversight for children of working parents during the summer and after school. o Allowing opportunities for people to learn to relate to different types of people Why Recreation is Important Video

Ways to add Educational Value


- Read a reading list for the next year, work on accelerated

reader list. - There are plenty of free poetry publishing sites, write and get published. - Research your favorite topic and create a presentation. - On your hike catalogue your findings e.g. different trees, plants, animals. - Again you can catalogue the different types of fish that are in the lake and calculate your odds at catching a certain fish. ex. you have a 1 in 5 chance at catching a catfish. - You can calculate approximately how many miles of slopes you ski.

Children with Disabilities


Are there activities they can enjoy in Kansas? Can they play sports if they have a disability? There are hundreds of adaptive sports options available to children with disabilities
