ARC WELDING
Electricity is conducted in the form of an arc which is established between the two metallic surfaces.
APPLICATIONS
1. It is employed for fabrication of pressure vessels and ships 2. Used in construction and repairs of machine Parts
Advantages:(i) Well suited for ferrous, nonferrous and their alloys (ii) It is faster and cheap when compared to gas welding Disadvantages:(i) Not suitable thin sections, mechanization (ii) Electrode replacement is necessary for long joints
WELDING TRANSFORMERS
Applications 1. It is used in welding non ferrous metals. 2. In joining steel sheets and repairing of steel structures.
CARBON WELDING
WELDING GENERATOR
BARE ELECTRODES Applications: 1) It is successful with DC supply 2) Low carbon steel is preferred 3) Metal deposition on railway wagon wheels Drawbacks: 1) Sensitive to chemical reactions 2) Decreases ductility 3) Increases embrittleness
COATED ELECTRODES: (i) LIGHTLY COATED: * 1mm thick coating consists of lime mixed with soluble glass which serves as binder * Increases the arc stability * Used for unimportant works
(ii)
HEAVILY COATED: * Welding is of high quality * Prevents oxidation * Used in shielded arc welding
ADVANTAGES: 1. It can be employed for all ferrous and non ferrous materials 2. Can be used for all positions of welding (FHVO) 3. Can be used with either straight or reverse polarity DISADVANTAGES: 1. It has high initial and maintenance cost 2. Machine is quite noisy in operation 3. It suffers from arc blow
APPLICATONS: (i) Fabrication and errection. (ii) Repair of broken and damaged equipments. Examples : * Aircraft construction * Automobile construction * Buildings, Bridges * Pressure vessels and tanks
welding
ADVANTAGES: 1. A welded joint is as strong as the base metal 2. Welded equipment is not costly and is portable 3. It permits considerable freedom in design 4. A large number of similar & dissimilar metals and alloys can be welded
DISADVANTAGES: 1. It gives harmful radiation & fumes 2. It results in residual stress and needs heat treatment to relieve the internal stresses 3. The structure of joint is not same as Base Metal.
