PRESENT TENSE
Simple Present Tense Present Continuous Tense Present Perfect Tense

Simple Present Tense


Function 1. Used for a habitual or repeated action, that is, for something that we do every day, always, often, or usually 2. Shows a general truth or a fact ( for something that is always true) 3. Used for an action or something which is happening now Examples a) Mother usually cooks dinner at 7pm b) They walk to the recreation park every morning a) All that glitters is not gold b) Smoking is bad for health a) Watch how the stars shine b) Look at the cute squirrel

4. Used for a planned action

a) The meeting starts in five minutes. b) They sail for Thailand next week

5. To give instructions

a) Clean all the windows before lunch today. b) Pour the water into the container carefully lest it spills. a) That man is not honest. b) I enjoy collecting stamps.

6. To express thoughts and feelings for the moment

Present Continuous Tense


Function Example 1. To show that an action is a) She is washing the fishing still going on at the time of tank speaking and is not completed b) Mother is chatting with yet father through the internet. 2. To show a planned action a) He is taking the LRT to town this evening b) She is baking a cake for the class party this afternoon.

3. To show a usually unpleasent action which is done repeatedly and has become a habit.

a) He is always misplacing his pens. b) She is always boasting about her marks.

4. To show progress or change

a) ahmads English is improving by leaps and bounds under Mr Browns tutelage. b) He is doing well at the university.

Present Perfect Tense


Function 1. Used for an action which has just been completed Examples a) I have just painted my room b) I have completed washing all the crockery. a) They have lived in the city since 1990. b) He has worked in Canada for the years.

2. Used for an action that has been going on from the past, that is, something that happened in the past but is still going on ( usually used with since or for)

3. Used for an action that happened or did not happen at an unspecified time in the past.

a) Dhr has prepared her speech for the ceremony b) I have not completed my work.

4. Used for something that happened in the past that affects the present

a) The cutting of the trees has caused landslides. b) Smoking has resulted in him having cancer.

Simple Past Tense


Function 1. Used for showing something that happened in the past Example a) They went to the movies just now. b) She talked to the principal about her transfer last week. a) He looked everywhere but could not find his sisters cat. b) They swept and washed their house thoroughly after the floodsubsided. a) Could you please open the window? b) Did you want to go to town?

2. Shows an action that was wholly completed in the past

3. Used for a polite action

Past Continuous Tense


Function Example 1. Used for an action that was going a) They were celebrating their on at a certain time in past success in the contest just now. b) The baby was crying the whole night.

2. Shows a past habitual action

a) The coach was telling the players the rules of the competition. b) The siblings were constantly arguing about their toys. a) I was s;eeping when the curtains caught fire. b) Father was polishing the car when it started to rain

3. Shows an action that is interrupted by something or somebody

Past Perfect Tense

1. Shows an action that had been completed before another action took place.

a) The teacher had left the class when he fell from the chair.

Function 1. Used for an action that will have been completed at some point in time in the future before another action has begun. Example a) I shall have finished preparing the slogan before he comes. b) We shall have eaten the whole pie before father gets home.
