Three Step Interview

1. Teacher assigns a topic and sets a time limit.

Ideas For My Classroom Vocabulary Card Sort questions on why they sort the way they did

2.

On each team, one student stands ready to be interviewed by teammates.

Teammates interview the standing student, asking openended, fat, and true questions. When his/her time is up, the standing students sits down and is thanked by teammates. In turn, remaining students stand and are interviewed by teammates.

Learning Target

I can improve student engagement and content understanding through the use of cooperative learning principles.

Goals
Engage in studying cooperative learning and multiple intelligences Explore the benefits for students
Practice several structures to use in your classroom

#1 Management Technique Quiet Signal

Qualities of a Good Quiet Signal:

Students can SEE it from anywhere in the room. Students can HEAR it when they are interacting in teams. It's not overly annoying when used 15 times in one day! Students know how to spread the quiet signal to others. Room should be quiet within 3 to 5 seconds. If it takes longer, it's not working.

Value Line

Agree or Disagree: I use cooperative learning in my classroom. 10= all the time 1= not at all

Value Lines
1. A statement is announced and students take a stand on an imaginary line which stretches from one end of the classroom to another. Strongest agree= 10 Strongest disagree = 1 2. Students line up with out talking 3. Students listen to similar point of views (those standing next to them in line) 4. Value line can be folded to make groups of 2 or 4.

Cooperative Learning: What is It?

Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of varying abilities, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject.

Cooperative Learning: What is It?

Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught, but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement.

Six Key Concepts of Kagans Cooperative Learning

Teams - participate in teams Management - non-traditional classroom rules and norms established Will - Will to cooperate through structures Skill - Social Skills Principles - P.I.E.S. Structures - Teambuilding, Classbuilding, Mastery, Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, and Information Sharing

How Do I Assure Individual Accountability?

Create smaller group sizes. Give individual assessments. Periodically check for understanding student reports for anothers Point of View. Observe groups and record progress and contributions. Ask groups to assess team performance.

How Do I Assure Equal Participation & Simultaneous Interaction

Question to Ask Equal Participation: How equal is the participation? What structures are you using? Simultaneous Interaction: What percent of the class are active participants at any one moment?

How are you going to group your students for different activities? What social skills are you looking forward to promoting in your classroom? What structure are you going to try first and why?

RoundRobin Classroom Management List questions you have about managing cooperative learning in your classroom?

RoundRobin
1. Teacher sets time for group to complete task 2. In teams, students take turns responding to question (can respond verbally or written) 3. Each teammate has to respond in turn. If teammate needs help, others can give them an answer. 4. No repeat answers 5. Groups share out Ideas For My Classroom

Talking Chips
How is cooperative learning different from group work? What is your favorite structure you are going to use back in your classroom? Why and how are you going to use it? Was this session on cooperative learning or iPad apps? Give evidence for your choice.

Talking Chips
1. During a discussion teammates place their chip in the center each time they talk. They cannot talk again until all team members has placed a chip in the middle. 2. All teammates pick up their chip and begin again Ideas For My Classroom

Using Technology 1. Use Take Turns app keep track of the time each person has to talk. Instead of using their names, use numbers and have groups number off. 2. Dice: each person in the group has a dice that they move to the center of the board to show it is their turn.
