STAFF DEMOGRAPHICS
18 % are in their first 5 years of teaching
61.7 % have taught for 11 years or more 40.4 % have taught for over 20 years
Almost 80 % of staff own a smartphone but less than 20 % have an iPad. Nearly 60 % reported that they have had no difficulty in integrating technology in their subject area. Just under 70 % of staff have their own Facebook page (The figure for students was 72 %) However, 27 % of staff (and only 12 % of students) reported having no involvement in social media/blogging/photo sites. 98 % would like to see more Professional Development time devoted to up-skilling in Learning Technologies. STAFF SELF-ASSESSMENT OF THEIR OWN I.T. ABILITY

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED

It can be suggested that

virtually 60 % of staff could learn more with respect to the latest technologies. (Those who labeled themselves as capable, learning or struggling.) By contrast, the student percentage was only 3 %. who believe that their students know more about I.T... (* 57 % of students surveyed agreed that they know more!)

Given that 80 % have indicated

a need for more training we can assume that even those who regard themselves as Competent want to learn more! The figure for students was higher at 88 % holding teachers back but rather lack of PD in this area.

It is not fear of failure that is

This corresponds with the 60 %

VIEWS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Clearly, our teachers are

divided right down the middle on this particular issue.

There were comments

vehemently against platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Others are just waiting for the OK to go ahead ( as long as they can be in-serviced in the educational possibilities and benefits.)

SOCIAL MEDIA: THE STUDENT VIEW

Of those students surveyed As one student wrote

(in Year Levels 8, 10 and 11)

56 % admitted to using

technology for more than 8 hours per day.

82 % have a smartphone (Surprisingly, for me at least)

all kids need privacy and I think teachers would breach that a lot.

only 25 % were in favour of Social Media being used in class/learning.

TOP 5 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUESTS

I plan to offer after school

voluntary PD in each of these five areas before the end of 2012. The program will be posted on Download at AQ soon. I aim to make these sessions as hands-on as possible.
For those unable to attend,

I will upload presentations to the YouTube channel.
