PROJECT PHOENIX

-A tilt rotor

What is phoenix
Phoenix is a radio controlled UAV which is a tilt rotor . The main aim of this project is to build a UAV which can take off vertically and transform into a plane and again can land vertically. The main features of the phoenix are that vertical take off and landing, hovering , 4 direction movement, and transforming into a plane to gain higher speed and This UAV can be operated in helicopter mode or in a plane mode.

What is a tilt rotor

A tiltrotor is an aircraft which uses a pair or more of powered rotors (sometimes called proprotors) mounted on rotating shafts or nacelles at the end of a fixed wing for lift and propulsion, and combines the vertical lift capability of a helicopter with the speed and range of a conventional fixed-wing aircraft. e.g :-v22 osprey

How does the tilt rotor work

Tilt rotor has two powered rotors which can change plane of rotation. For vertical flight, the rotors are angled so the plane of rotation is horizontal, lifting the way a helicopter rotor does. As the aircraft gains speed, the rotors are progressively tilted forward, with the plane of rotation eventually becoming vertical. In this mode the wing provides the lift, and the rotor provides thrust as a propeller.

Description about phoenix

Phoenix is a tilt rotor and radio control UAV It has two tilt rotors which are placed at the edges of the wings. The wings are little forward swept and the wings have two cut parts called flaps and ailerons . Flaps are just useful as brakes and ailerons are helping in roll of the phoenix. It has a small fuselage .

Description about phoenix

Phoenix has fitted with a servo between the wing and rotor, such that it can facilitate the controlled rotor of the plane of rotation of the main rotor. It has V shaped vertical stabilizer and has rudder to the stabilizer for YAW control of the plane.

Description about phoenix

Phoenix has a horizontal stabilizer which counter acts the pitching moment created by the blowing wind on the wing . Horizontal stabilizer has a partition called elevator , which will help in the changing the angle of the attack of the plane. The vertical and horizontal stabilizer are attached to the fuselage by a tail.

The operations that can be performed

Vertical takeoff and landing Hovering 6 direction motion including side wards and backwards Ability to transform into a plane Ability to spin about vertical axis while hovering

Vertical takeoff and landing

The rotor will be aligned vertical and its plane rotation will be horizontal. The rotor will be maintained at sufficient rpm such that it produces enough thrust . The thrust produced will counter act the weight of the plane and thrust greater than the weight will make the plane take off vertically.

THRUST > WEIGHT

hovering
After gaining some altitude , we can make it hover by balancing the thrust by the weight. Thrust= weight

Forward motion
We can make the rotor to tilt forward by a servo attached between the wing and the rotor. By tilting the rotor forward direction to 30 deg to the vertical we can produce a component of force in forward direction and so we can move the plane in forward direction .F is the force produced by the rotor. And the other vertical component compensate the weight of the plane to make it vertically stable.

Back ward motion

Back ward motion can be attained as the same way as the forward motion. The two rotors will be aligned backwards so that a component of force acts back ward direction and the plane moves backwards.

Transformation to a plane
As it is not possible gain higher velocities in helicopter mode we can transform into a plane mode. After gaining sufficient velocity in helicopter mode we can transform into plane mode by aligning the rotor horizontally. And the entire force produced by the rotor will act in forward direction. The weight of the plane will be counter acted by the lift produced on the wings .
