Belief circle
Get a piece of paper for everyone on your table and write your name on it. Gather group in a circle If you agree with the statement I place in the middle place your piece of paper close to you. If you disagree with the statement I place in the middle place your piece of paper away from you. Its not designers that exploit poor people, its big companies Its always best to use local products or materials in our products Products should be made to last along time

The 6 Rs what are they?

RETHINK Take an existing product that becomes waste, and use the materials or parts for another purpose without changing its original form.
REUSE Dont use a material or buy a product if you think you dont need it or if its unsustainable.

RECYCLE Minimise the amount of material and energy you use

REPAIR Ask whether we can sustain our current way of life and the way we design and make REDUCE - When a product breaks down or does not function properly try to fix it. REFUSE Take an existing product that has become waste and reprocess the material to use in a new product.

TASK 1 3D DRAWING SKILLS\LESSON 8 and 9 SUSTAINABILITY\CLIMATE CHANGE T SHIRT.ppt

Which of these products best fit which R? page 50-51 photocopy

STARTER In groups of 3 or 4 cut out the 6 Rs Cut out the images Position the image next to the R it best suits WHY?

MAKE ME CAR FREE!

Shopping bags Ho do you get your shopping home? FACTS Plastic bags are made from oil which is a natural source which is unsustainable Plastic bags take up to 500 years to decay Paper bags could be use but easily get wet and have to be transported i.e., in a car An alternative is a organically sourced, fair traded hemp or cotton bag but if you have heavy shopping it still as to be transported by a car. IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE?

MAKE ME CAR FREE!

In groups of 3 or 4 design a bag or trolley that helps a fashion conscious young person to shop without the car. THE QUESTION IS would you use or buy the product that you design? YOU ARE DESIGNING A PRODUCT SO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE STRUCTURE AND SHAPE OF THE BAG OR TROLLEY SKETCHES NEED TO BE DRAWN IN 3D

The newspaper bridge

Make me with less! In groups of 3 or 4 you are going to make a bridge made out of newspaper and masking tape. This bridge will be supported between 2 desks with a distance of 40cms) The winner will be the team whose bridge supports the weight (200 grams) for 5 minutes with the least amount of materials used for the bridge. In your groups you have 30 minutes to research into bridge design using the website www.design-technology/org/bridges.htm

DECIDE WHETHER YOU WILL MAKE A:

Beam bridge:

Arch bridge
Cantilever bridge Suspension bridge

DESIGN TASK BRIDGE DESIGN

Once you have decided on the style of bridge you are going to design you need to: Sketch quick drawings of your bridge from the FRONT/SIDE AND PLAN VIEW demonstration needed Third Angle Orthographic Drawing - an Example The bridge cannot exceed HEIGHT 30cms WIDTH 50cms otherwise you are disqualified

30 MINUTES TO COMPLETE TASK

PACKAGING How can packaging promote sustainable design?

Packaging is necessary for many products. Its design, and the logos, trademarks and images can give important messages about the quality of the product.

Packaging is also seen as wasteful and logos and brand identity are disliked by many as the symbols of large corporations.

You are to design packaging for 3 items which shows that you have minimised the amount of packaging used to house the items

IN YOUR GROUPS .You must be able to see the items inside of the packaging .You must be able to see the brand and logo on the packaging . You can use any materials that you want, particularly if they are recyclable

IS SO MUCH PACKAGING NECESSARY? WHAT MATERIALS COULD I USE TO HOUSE THE PRODUCTS

INSPIRATIONAL PRODUCTS

Cut out the 3 items below and sketch design ideas for a piece of packaging which will reduce the amount of materials used in typical gift packs LYNX (TRADEMARK)AND DARK TEMPTATION (BRAND) must be present on the packaging. Incorporate the swirl logo into the packaging Final presentation drawing must be drawn on a piece of A3 paper with the cut outs of the 3 items below displayed as though you were looking at the packaging from the front. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inspirational Alberto Alessi Products

Question? What have all these designs got in common? (design criteria?)
(here are my suggestions, you should be able to add more) bright colours fun little people have faces/hands/features smiling mostly for the kitchen made from ?

Two approaches here:

1. You have 10 minutes to sketch some of your own ideas for a product (see design sheet on next page)
2. Collect a piece of A4 paper for each person in your team

2.

On each piece of paper you should sketch at least four different ideas for your Alessi product.

Each pupil has to vote for the 4 they think is the best and fulfils the criteria. (slide 2) (a little tick on each they choose is appropriate) This approach shows that there are lots of ideas, its easy to do and sharing ideas gives you more options.

Ideas for Alessi products. sketches

In your groups you must now:

Model all four ideas using card and scaling the object to a estimated correct size.
If the product is a potato peeler you can make a 2 dimensional model ( 1 piece of card)

If your product is a kettle you will have to make a 3 dimensional model (at least 2 pieces of card)

You will present the most accurate, well made and Alessi influenced prototype stating:

what the product is how it works the brandname given to the product
