Identify important elements

A

good life means

different things to
different people.
Consider how a good
life is represented in at
least two works
studied.

Define terms
Good life: Positive. It is usually what a
character aspires to have.
Different: Compare and contrast.
Consider: Offer a considered review or
balanced discussion of a particular
topic.
At least two works studied: It can be two
works in depth or three works without so
much detail.

Consider the works you have

studied
Master

Harold and the Boys

Haroun and the Sea of Stories
The House on Mango Street
A Small Place
Krik? Krak!
1984
A Clockwork Orange

And also the characters

Master

Harold, Sam, Willy

Guppies, Chupwalas, Haroun, Rashid,
politicians
Esperanza
Jamaica Kincaid (author, all perspectives are
based on her opinion: tourists, Brits,
Antiguans)
girl & boy from Children of the Sea,
Josephines daughter, Guy, night woman, Marie
Winston, Julia, Parsons, proles, Inner Party
(OBrien)
Alex, government, prison charles, F. Alxander

A Small Place
Antiguans:

a good life is escaping

poverty, living in better conditions.
Kincaid thinks they should also realice
what is going on and do something
about it.
Brits: a good life is exploiting Antiguans.
Tourists: a good life is visiting beautiful
places without worrying.
Essay: based on Kincaids opinion.

Krik? Krak!
Different

stories, all tied with Haitian history

and culture. In this case, it would be
important to mention something about the
authors context (Haiti).
A good life is related to the theme of
escape. They suffer, and their way out is
through fantasy (Children of the Sea,
1936, A Wall of Fire Rising, Night
Women, Between the Pool and the
Gardenias).

1984
Winston:

a good life is freedom for everyone,

no lies, no oppresion, being certain of what
youve lived, in short: escaping the Partys
doctrine.
Julia: a good life is doing whatever you want
despite the Party.
Parsons: a good life is following the Party.
Proles: oblivious & ignorant. Dont know what a
good life is. How they are living is OK.
Inner Party: a good life is having power, being
superior (privileges) , having everyone at your
will.

A Clockwork Orange
Alex: change in perspective. At the
beginning, a good life is violence, power,
doing what he wants escaping the police.
Then, it is settling down and thinking about
more mature things (family, work, etc.).
Government: a good life is reducing
violence (oppression doesnt matter).
Prison charles & F. Alexander: a good life is
being able to choose.

Now its your turn: choose a

work
Master

Harold and the Boys: Master

Harold: having fun, better relationsfip with
father; Willy: doing something he loves
(dancing); Sam: making a change (feels
opressed)
Haroun and the Sea of Stories: context
makes Haroun & father try to escape: good
life is telling stories and expressing feelings
(themes: hope, freedom of speech)
The House on Mango Street: Esperanza:
belong in her new culture, help homeless
people

Now we start writing

Introduction
General

statement
Thesis statement
Define terms.
State the works you will use and why.
You can paraphrase the question.

Body
You

can relate the concept of a good life

to other devices when you see it
necessary. For example:

In Krik? Krak! It relates to the authors

context.
In A Small Place, it relates to the genre.
In 1984, it relates to the theme.

Explain

why relating them to the

different devices is important, especially
if you do no write about the same
devices for each work.

Body
Compare

and contrast characters within

and among books.
Dont forget to include examples and
explain them.
Link the paragraphs.
Remember that you have to write a
balanced review: write about the two or
three works equally.

Conclusion
Wrap

up.
Restate your thesis and main arguments
(summary).
Finish with an interesting sentence that
leaves the reader thinking. Be original.
Remember this is the last impression
your reader will receive from your work,
so try to make it memorable.
