INTRODUCTION
LEP

1990 Found to be superior than display like LCD & electro luminance displays Though not commercialized yet but ,these has proved a mile stone in field of flat panel displays Research on LEP is going under CAMBRIDGE DISPLAY TECH. LTD.(CDT)

is a light emitting polymer discovered in

Lcd has proved it self a best kind of display possible major disadvantage is less life span Cambridge display tech. is trying to develop a display medium with characteristics like LCD & good life span with LEP

WHAT IS LEP
LEP is a polymer which emits light when voltage is applied to it.

Band gap B/W valance & conduction band specifies the colour & wavelength of light emitted. First LEP used poly phinylene vinylene (PPV) as emitting layer . PPV and its derivative including poly pyridines poly phenylenes can also be used as emitting layer.

CHEMISTRY BEHIND LEP

LEPs are constructed from a special class of polymer called CONJUGATED POLYMER. Plastic materials with metallic & semiconductor characterstics are called conjugated polymers. These polymers posses delocalized pi electron whose mobility shows properties of semiconductor.

Charge transport mechanism in conjugated polymers is different from traditional inorganic semiconductors. Conjugated polymers finds application in battery electrode, capacitor electrolyte,.

BASIC STRUCTURE & WORKING

The

basic LEP consist of a polymer sandwiched B/W anode & cathode. An indium-tin-oxide coated glass is placed with polymer. On top of it there is a metal electrodes of Al,Li,Mg orAg. When a basic voltage is applied holes & electrons move inside polymer .

Moving

holes & electrons combines to form hole electron pair called EXACITONS. These exactions are in excited state & go back to initial state by releasing energy. These release in energy produces light which comes out of device. These phenomenon is called ELECTROLUMINESCENCE.

TYPES OF LEP DISPLAYS

LEP displays are of two types: 1) Passive matrix 2) Active matrix Passive matrix display:

MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE

LEP can be manufactured by. Spin coating technique.

ADVANTAGES

Operating voltage is only 3.3 volts. Lifetime is more than 50,000 hours. Greater power efficiency. Can be viewed at any angle. Cost is much less than CRT. Switching speed is 1000 times faster than LCD. Higher luminance efficiency.

LIMITATIONS

1. Ageing of LEP :
Even under the ideal condition ,the light intensity gradually decreases and some regions become totally dark this phenomenon is called ageing of LEP.

2. Space charge effect : This effect comes into picture when difference in electron-hole mobility increases. Due to this effect electric field near electrodes decreases & hence amount of injected current decreases which leads to poor display quality. Research is still going on to overcome this barrier.

APPLICATIONS

To manufacture HDTV. Light weight wrist watch. Multi color cell phone display. Aircraft cockpit instrumentation panel.

PERFORMANCE EQUATIONS

1. Internal efficiency : Internal efficiency is given by, (int) =2* n^(2) * (ext) 2. Power efficiency: Power efficiency is given by, (power) = (ext) * E(p) * V^(-1) 3. Thickness (d) : Thickness of polymer film is given by, d= Co* ((Vo*Do)^1/4) /((w)^1/2)

OUTPUT IN MATLAB

CONCLUSION

The basic conclusion what we can made from this discussion is that, With help of LEP we can easily generate a display with high efficiency and improved life-time and we can replace bulky CRT. As the core material in LEP is plastic hence cost of display will be very less.
