Background

Population Services International launched a program among doctors of 30 districts across 5 states in India to promote the family planning especially IUD (Copper-T) among women. IUD is one of the most prevalent reversible method among married women of reproductive age worldwide. Out of large universe of doctors , PSI has convinced around 2400 qualified and non qualified doctors to be part of the program After 2 years of implementation, PSI has intended to conduct research in order to measure the impact of the program.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

To understand the doctors own disposition towards the methods advocated by the program and its impact on the program. To know if there is any increase in overall usage of IUD in the program areas i.e. 30 districts across 5 states.

Target Group under consideration: Doctors Qualified Non Qualified Family Couple falling under the age group 20-40 yrs. Couples who are considering for spacing .

Research Design
Primary research design is comprised of : 1. Questionnaire (Open ended and Close ended) Open-ended questions are those questions that will solicit additional information from the inquirer. And are used to develop trust as they are perceived as less threatening, allow an unrestrained or free response. Closed ended questions are those questions, which can be answered finitely by either yes or no. They result in quick response and require little time investment, just the answer. 2. Interviews (Structured and Unstructured) A structured interview is when the interviewer has a series of questions written down on a piece of paper, and the process involves asking those questions verbatim and then noting the answers given An unstructured interview is one where there may be a script to get the process started, but once the interview gets going the interviewer will start to follow her own points of interest and stop following any script.

Sampling Design
Sampling method used : Quota Sampling :The population is first segmented into mutually exclusive sub-groups, just as in stratified sampling. Then judgment is used to select the subjects or units from each segment based on a specified proportion. Cluster Sampling: A sampling technique where the entire population is divided into groups, or clusters, and a random sample of these clusters are selected. Sample Size & Distribution: Assuming that the program covers 6 districts in each states. Total number of doctors covered = 1920. Total number of districts covered = 30. Total number of doctors per district = 64 We further divide each district into 4 zones : North, East, West, South comprising 16 doctors in each zone comprising both qualified and non qualified doctors.
(*we have divided each district in to 4 zones to achieve precision and accuracy in our research i.e. to measure the impact of the program respectively and determine which zone in each district needs more working.)

Among each zone we allot 8 as qualified doctors and 8 as non-qualified.

In addition to this, number of couples surveyed/ zone = 30 , leading to total of 720 couples in a state. Total number of couples questioned = 3600( all states). Total Sample Size = 5520

AREAS OF ENQUIRY
Indicators used for capturing details about the intervention

Knowledge Indicators For Public Socio demographic characteristics. No. of respondents who cited knowledge about IUD method. No. of respondents who are satisfied with the procedure
For Doctors No. of times the doctor has campaigned and advocated the IUD program on weekly basis. No. of patients visit him weekly for the IUD

Behavioral Indicators and method seeking Indicators

IUD

Behavioral issues of young adults. Environmental factor and social factor influencing adult reproductive health behavior. No. of people who reported having utilized IUD during last 2 years. No. of people who reported age of first encountering IUD.

DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES

Tools and Techniques that could be used during analysis of the collected data: Cross Tabulation: It is the process made with two or more data sources (variables) that are tabulating the results of one against the other. They give a basic picture about the interrelation of two variables and helps to find out interactions between them. Annova: It is used for comparison of two or more group means. Simple Co-relation: Simple linear correlation is a measure of the degree to which two variables vary together, or a measure of the intensity of the association between two variables.

T-tests: It is used for testing the significance of difference between two sample means.
