A Low-Dropout regulator is a DC linear regulator which can operate with a very small input-output differential voltage. A lowdropout linear regulator will operate with input voltages only slightly higher than the desired output voltage. For example, classic linear regulators, such as the 7805 or LM317 need about 2.5 to 3 V higher input voltage for a given output voltage. For a 5V output, these older devices need a 8V input. But its 1.3V maximum for AMS1117.

- The advantages of a low dropout voltage include a lower minimum operating voltage, higher efficiency operation and lower heat dissipaiton. - LDO regulators work in the sam way as all linear voltage regulators. - LDO regulators are usually the optimal choice based on dropout voltage, typically 100 mV to 200 mV. The disadvantage, however, is that the groundpin current of a LDO is usually higher than a standard regulator.
