Service Bill of Material Guide

Service Bill of Material Guide

Service Bill of Material (SBOM) tool was designed to help the user
develop a service parts stocking list for a specific engine or engine configuration once a representative Engine Serial Number (ESN) is known.

The SBOM list displays the current part numbers, including

supersessions and kits, needed to service the particular engine or configuration used to derive the list. In addition to the parts list, the tool also displays other attributes for each part number, such as:
Part Description Service Level (Maintenance, Repair, Full Service, Parts Distribution Center ReCon cross reference part number if applicable DN or IDN pricing (displayed for Distributor access points only, not dealers) Quantity of part number required per engine Demand Last 6 months of worldwide Distributor sales Average number of the part number used in a typical warranty repair

Service Bill of Material Guide

The tool was developed to assist distributors, dealers, and factory
customer support leaders in creating customized parts stocking lists based on the service demand history of parts through Cummins distributors worldwide.

The SBOM tool should NOT be used as a method of determining a

Required parts stocking list, but rather serves as a reality check for what parts are being consumed in the distribution channel on identical engines and likely would be good to have on hand to support local customers.

Many factors influence a particular stocking list and these factors should all
be considered when determining a list that best suits a locations needs. Among those factors are:

3

Certification Level of the service provider Customer expectations for repair timeliness Available capital to invest in repair parts inventory Proximity to regional headquarters or other PDCs Local engine population to be supported with parts inventory Historical knowledge of parts that have high turnover

Service Bill of Material Guide

Once the SBOM tool is run for a particular ESN, a stocking facility or service
provider can create a part number list based on usage frequency, historical knowledge of parts that have high turnover, and type of part (Maintenance, Repair, or Full Service) that matches the service providers level

Once a particular part number stock list has been defined, it is necessary to
determine the quantities for each part. When determining the part number quantities the same local inputs of certification level, customer expectations, available capital, and location should also be considered. In addition to these factors, you should also know the engine population being supported.

The following table can be used to help with this process:

Engine Population 0-19 20-99 100-499 >500
4

No. of Engine Sets for local stock 1 2 3 4

Service Bill of Material Guide

Example: A location is supporting 150 engines of a particular engine
configuration.
They have determine that an oil pan gasket is a part they want to stock. From the table, they should stock a quantity of 3 pieces. They have determined that an injector is a part they want to stock. From the table, they should stock a quantity of 18 pieces (3 X 6 injectors/engine).

Additionally, the parts on the SBOM list are identified by noun name
using specified service levels as defined by the Dealer Certification Program. Details of Dealer Certification can be found on Cummins Worldwide Service Provider System (WWSPS) website.

Service Bill of Material Guide

Service Levels specified within the Dealer Certification Program:
Maintenance: Water pumps, exhaust manifold, starter, alternator and bracket, fan hub, belt tensioner, valve cover and gasket, vibration damper, front cover and front cover gasket, thermostat, oil fill cap, dipstick and dipstick holder, filter heads, filters, belts, external lines and tubes that dont have fuel running through them, spark plugs, glow plugs, spark plug wire, and gaskets associated with major components on this list (e.g. water pump gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, etc.) Repair: All maintenance items plus everything external on a long block (includes electronics and fuel systems). Full Service: Includes Maintenance items, Repair items plus internal engine components (internal wear/failure items plus head gaskets, rod/main bearings, rings, and lube pumps). Include component rebuild parts such as fuel system sub components, turbocharger sub components, and air compressor sub components. PDC: All of the above plus OEM parts and commercial sales kits.

Service Bill of Material Guide

The parts in the Excel file are pre-sorted so that they appear in Service Level order (1. Maintenance 2. Repair 3. Full Service 4. PDC 5. All other.) The saleable and high demand parts will appear at the top of each service level list. First sorted by Service level

Next sorted by demand

Service Bill of Material Guide

Analyze the Service Bill of Material spreadsheet to derive the
stocking list. If the ESN is for a new engine launch, you will need to use a combination of the VMI Distributor stocking list that appears in that engines Product Announcement on Quickserve Online and the SBOM. The reason for this is that new parts on new engine introductions will usually have little to no parts demand in the first 3 to 6 months of production. Manually add appropriate Cummins Filtration part numbers by cross-referencing the SBOM filter part numbers (Cummins numbers) to Cummins filtration part numbers using the following website: http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/fleet/en/catalog/index.jsp. Consider all your local inputs when developing your stocking list:
Certification level of service provider, customer expectations, proximity to regional headquarters, engine population, historical knowledge of high turnover parts, etc.

Service Bill of Material Guide

Example Lets assume that a service provider is informed
that a group of 250 ISX 02 engines are being run and maintained in a remote location. The certification level of this service provider is Maintenance. The service provider has acquired a representative ESN of one of the engines and they are interested in developing a parts stocking list for their location. The ESN is 79076904 which is a 450 HP ISX engine built in November 2004. By running SBOM they have determined that there are 40 parts that are on this engine and noted as maintenance level parts. By looking at parts sales demand column and applying local knowledge around high maintenance parts, they have narrowed that list down to 22 part numbers.
14

Service Bill of Material Guide

From the earlier table on engine population, they have
determined that they should stock 3 engines sets of each part.
Engine Population 0-19 20-99 100-499 >500 No. of Engine Sets for local stock 1 2 3 4

The ReCon parts were noted and added and the Cummins
Filtration part numbers (Cummins) were replaced by their corresponding Fleetguard numbers. The final stocking list appears on the next page.

Service Bill of Material Parts List Guide Book

Introduction The Service Bill of Material (SBOM) was created to satisfy the often requested stocking list for a given Engine Serial Number (ESN) or specific engine configuration. In the past, requests for stocking lists generated many labor hours of configuration and option break down to service level parts and potential service quantities based on part names. The SBOM tool derives the service level parts based on an ESN. Parts displayed are the most current parts including the supersession and kits. The SBOM tool also shows the user the amount of service level parts that have been used in the past six months, as well as, certification repair level (Maintenance, Repair, Full Service, or Parts Distribution Center) for the users evaluation on what they may want to stock.

17

Depending on many factors that apply to the user (certified repair level, customer expectations, available capital, proximity to regional headquarters, engine population, historical knowledge of parts that have high turnover, etc), they will be able to sort the SBOM list to meet their needs. The How to run and analyze Service Bill Of Material section will walk a user through the process of using an ESN to establish the bill of material and some advise on sorting the results for certified repair level, usage, and how to address new Value Package Introduction parts that will not show any usage (if using the tool for newly launched engines). NOTE: The SBOM tool should not be used as a required stocking list. The tool is only meant to assist in creating a customized stocking list based on the history of parts used from Cummins Inc., and the individual needs of the stocking location. At this time, the SBOM tool only will work with an ESN. You can not use a Shop Order or engine family name.

Engine Set Guidelines

This section is designed to help locations determine the quantity of parts to
stock for a given part number, sometimes referred to as stocking depth. From the Service Bill of Material list, a stocking facility can pick and choose part numbers based on usage frequency, historical knowledge of parts that have high turnover, type of part (maintenance, repair, full service), amount of capital available to invest in parts stocking, etc. to develop their own unique stocking list. From this stocking list, a repair facility or stocking location can use the following guidelines to determine the stocking quantity per part number. The location must first know the quantity of engines (or engine population) that are being supported in their area. Once the engine population is known (left hand side of table), use the right side of the table to determine the number of engine sets to come up with for each part number. User should consider local inputs: certified repair level, customer expectations, available capital, proximity to regional headquarters, engine population, historical knowledge of parts that have high turnover, etc),

Service Level Criteria

With exception of the PDC list (which includes every part that the engine is
made of) the parts on the SBOM lists are selected / identified by noun name following the Service Levels specified within the Dealer Certification Program. Details of Dealer Certification can be found on Cummins WWSPS website. a) Maintenance. water pumps, exhaust manifold, starter, alternator & bracket, fan hub, belt tensioner, valve cover and valve cover gasket, vibration damper, front cover and front cover gasket, thermostat, oil fill cap, dipstick and dipstick holder, filter heads, filters, belts, external lines and tubes that don't have fuel running through them, spark plugs, glow plugs, spark plug wire, gaskets associated with major components in this list (e.g. water pump gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, etc b) Repair. All maintenance + Every thing external on a long block (includes electronics and fuel systems)

c) Full Service. Includes Maintenance, Repair + internal engine components

(internal wear/failure items PLUS head gaskets rod/main bearings, rings, and lube pumps.). Include component rebuild parts such as fuel system sub components, turbo sub components and air compressors sub components

d) PDC - All of the above + OEM Parts, Commercial Sales Kits.
