Regional co-operations

Apart from the pool and other organs of non-aligned movement, few regional unions of press agencies exist and served countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America Another large agency is Inter Press Service (IPS), created in 1964 by a group of journalists in order to provide the information services. It is a non-profit cooperation based in Rome. The agency operates in a manner different from other global news services by promoting horizontal flow of news on a cooperative basis among developing countries.

IPS is a Worldwide. A network of journalists in more than 100 countries with satellite communication links to 1,000 outlets. IPS has regional editorial centers that operates in Africa, Asia, The Caribbean Europe, Latin America, and North America. More than 250 journalists cover more than 1,000 clients.

Other alternative agencies that have been adding diversities to global news flow includeDepthnews, Gemini and South-North News Service. Caribbean News Agency (1977) and Pac news for pacific ocean area got some success in its objectives. The success seems to be due to their independence from government and professionalism.

Regarding to the cooperation of press agencies, one of the most important components of the international information exchange system, when UNESCO organized a conference in 1961 in Bangkok. Which marked the creation of the Organization of Asian News Agencies (OANA)

Its member countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, S. Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri lanka and Thailand. On November 1981 in fifth assembly of OANA, nine another countries joined the organization. Asian Information Service (AIS) was established in 1979 Organization of African Unity-1963

Pan African News Agency (PANA) was inaugurated in 1983 with the major objective, to promote an effective exchange of political, economic, social and cultural information among member states and to liberate African information from imperialist domination and from foreign monopolies etc. In 1993 PANA said it would shift from reliance to national agencies for more independent reporting and try to make the use of internet to distribute news.

The Union of National Radio and Television Companies of Africa (URTNA) has been operated since 1962. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was founded in Baghdad, Iraq, with the signing of an agreement in September 1960 by five countries namely Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. They were to become the Founder Members of the Organization. In 1979 representatives of the OPEC met and they took decision to setup a news agency OPEC

It begun its activity in 1980 by disseminating news on the economies and energy among its member countries (OPECNA)
