HALF RATE EFFECTS ON SQI

SQI calculation algorithm greatly depends on the Codec type used The algorithm in the base station calculates a value from -40 to +50 dBQ. The top value depends on the speech codec that is used since the different codecs have different basic speech quality. The following are the top values for the different codec types: HR: 17 dBQ FR: 21 dBQ EFR: 30 dBQ AMR HR: 28 dBQ AMR FR: 30 dBQ.

In the BSC the SQI values are divided into the three categories Good, Acceptable and Unsatisfactory. The thresholds that classifies the SQI values into these three categories are 13.5 dBQ and 22.5 dBQ, i.e. everything below 13.5 dBQ is Unsatisfactory, everything between 13.5 and 22.5 dBQ is Acceptable and everything above 22.5 dBQ is Good. Conclusion
Since for HR the maximum value we can get for SQI is only 17 dBQ, the percentage of SQI Rating Good UL (above 22.5 dBQ) would shift to SQI Rating Acceptable (in between 13.5 dBQ to 22.5 dBQ). As what can be seen on the presented trends, the Acceptable SQI percentage increases while the Good one decreases RECOMMENDATIONS: (1) Have a test BSC. Deactivate HR and trend SQI performance. Compare SQI statistics before and after deactivation. (2) Expansion of congested cells (3) If expansion is not possible for congested cells, for time being, biased neighbor cells for calls and handovers
