EAT AND COMFORT COOLING (AND HEATING)

presented byBhawesh Bhuvnesh 2yr,mechanical

What is EAT and what is this presentation all about-a quick cap?

The concept
The EAT leverages on the fact that the soil temp. at a depth of 4.5 to 5m below the surface remains steady throughout the year while the ambient temp varies a great deal.

Distribution of treated air

Once heating and cooling achieved ,the air is transported and distributed thereafter to the space served ,by fans ,ducting and such other air distribution system.

The way EAT works(algorithm)

1.Air is drawn in from the ambient.
2.It is then cooled/ heated as it passes through the EAT. 3.Air is then transported and distributed to space served .

Design variables
1. Pipe length(L) 2. Pipe diameter(d) 3. Pipe spacing(lateral distance between pipes) 4. Velocity of the air (U)in the pipe

3 year performance

Daily usage pattern

Simulation results shown are for tunnel operating 24 hours a day and throughout the year . We can optimize it by giving it rest in between working hours. Double staging of pipes may also be employed to improve the performance and that dependence on economic considerations.

Monsoon performance
In monsoon , tunnel is not as effective as in summer and winter, but still perform better than Evaporative Cooling system. Mechanical refrigeration(chilled water coil) can be used to improve conditions in monsoon season if desired.

Favourable factors for application of EAT

Adequate land space, A site free from rocks ,boulders etc, A low water table, Possibilities of evacuation from a depth of 5cm and below, High soil density, High soil thermal conductivity and Low thermal diffusivity.

Potential and limitations in performance

The process that take place in EAT system is essentially a constant dew-point process. Lowest temperature that can be attained is steady temperature of soil and that dependence on efficiency of tunnel. This is in contrast to evaporative cooling which is essentially a adiabatic(constant wet bulb) process.

Concluding
EAT have the potential to become a major player in the category of Passive cooling system , which helps in sustainable development. Apart from very less energy consumption , EAT is also effective in winters too. It will play a major role in future in HVAC field.
