First GSM network was launched in 1991 in Finland. Higher digital voice quality and low cost alternatives to making calls. GSM is 2nd generation system.

Standard for digital voice transmission in the 900 MHz band. Uplink band: 890-915MHz Downlink band: 935-960MHz

G.S.M-1800

Because of growing no. of subscribers 1800 band is used. Uplink band:1710-1785MHz Downlink band:1805-1880MHz

MOBILE STATION(MS) Represent the terminal equipment as use by subscriber supported by G.S.M It consists of two parts:1. SIM(Subscriber Identity Module) 2. Mobile equipment.

BASE TRANSCEIVER STATIONS (BTS)

BTS receives the signals sent by the mobile station. One BTS can cover one or more than one cell. BTS connected to BSC through Abis link. BTS transmits and receives voice on air interface.

BASE STATION CONTROLLER (BSC)


BSC provides all the control functions and physical links between the MSC and BTS. BSC serve no. of BTS.

MOBILE SWITCHING CENTRE(MSC)

It is the heart of G.S.M. It contains data base of all subscribers. Management of required logical radio link channel during calls.

HOME LOCATION REGISTERS (HLR) Database used for storage and management of subscriptions. It stores permanent data about subscribers. MSC communicates with HLR to get database of subscriber on call.

VISITOR LOCATION REGISTERS (VLR)

Contains temporary information about subscribers. Always integrated with the MSC. Works in roaming.

AUTHENTICATION CENTRE(AUC)
Contains subscriber authentication data called subscriber keys. Generates unique data pattern called chipper key to encrypt user data and speech.

EQUIPMENT IDENTITY REGISTER (EIR)

Contains info. About identity of mobile equipment that prevents calls from stolen,unauthorized mobile stations. Three status of equipment are :1. White list 2. Grey list 3. Black list
