Basic understanding of building and construction. Plans, drawings, sketching, symbols. Specification, building materials and equipments. Building suppliers and manufacturers. Roles of constructor and trades in construction.

Course Descriptions
Discuss and understand the concept of building and construction, focusing on low rise building. Will covers elements of building, construction technologies and techniques, materials and equipment needed, and specifications.

Course Requirements
Students understanding on how to read and understand construction drawings and plans. Basic building elements. Interaction between students and lecturers. Team working among students.

Learning outcomes
Understand the principles of design and method of construction of the related building components. Able to describe the process of carrying out the work. Able to sketch the plan, section, elevation and diagrams if necessary of all the related building components. Able to understand and describe the relevant construction materials and equipments.

What is building?
Something that is built, as for human habitation; a structure. Any man-made structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or continuous occupancy. An act of construction.

Draughtsmanship
Draughtsman: A skilled worker who draws plans of buildings or machines. Draughtsmanship: The creation of artistic pictures or diagrams. Output: Architectural, construction and engineering drawings and diagrams.

Drawings
The construction of any structure or building is described by a set of related drawings that give the client and construction personal a complete sequential graphic description of each phase of the construction process. Types of construction drawings: presentation drawings, shop drawings, master plan drawings and working drawing.

Presentation Drawings
to present the proposed building or facility in an attractive setting in its natural surrounding at the proposed site. consist of perspective views complete with colours and shading.

Shop Drawings
are drawings, schedules, diagrams, and other related data to illustrate a material, a product, or a system for some portion of the work prepared by the contractor, manufacturer or supplier. Product data includes brochures, illustrations, and other information by which the work will be judged.

Master Plan Drawings


Used in architectural, topographical and construction fields. It shows sufficient features to be used as guides in long-range area development and contains section boundary lines, horizontal and vertical control data, acreage, locations and descriptions of existing and proposed structures, sidewalks, streams, etc.

Working Drawings
Any drawing that furnishes the information required by the craftsmen to manufacture a machine part or by a builder crew to erect a structure. Complete information is presented in a set of working drawings, complete enough that the user will require no further information.

Sketch
Define as a draft or rough outline of an idea. Sketches can be produced free-hand or using rules and set squares to give basic guidelines. All sketches should be clear to show all necessary details. Can be drawn by observing an object or generating new ideas.

Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (SMM2). Detail description on how to measure quantities for building works. Divided into several sections. Important to understand the contents.
