Motivation
Care for our home (Planet Earth)
Survival of Human race depends upon the survival of Planet Earth.

Energy efficient system is more profitable.

Background

1990s:

Introduction of GSM 6 billion mobile subscribers

2012:

New 1000 users/minute

Background
50% expenditure is of electricity bill in a cellular network. 4 million base stations with 12,000 new BS every year 1 BS=25MWh per year 1 medium cellular network consume as much energy as 170,000 homes.

Heterogeneous Network

Heterogeneous Network

System Model
D: Inter site Distance R: length of side

Propagation Model

Prx is the received power Ptx is the transmitted power r is the propagation distance is the path loss exponent is the random variable to denote shadowing

Cell Coverage
Cell coverage is the region covered in cell when the received power is above certain level (Pmin).

Ac denotes cell area

Area Spectral Efficiency

Mean of achievable rates in a network per unit bandwidth per unit area, measured in bits per second per Hertz per square kilometer.

represents large area around reference site (r,,) denote the SNR at (r,).

Area power consumption

Defined as the average power consumed in a cell divided by the cell area, its unit is Watt per square kilometer

is a parameter to assess the efficiency of energy budget of a cellular network

Site power consumption

aM represents the Tx power dependent losses like

power amplifier Feeder loss Site cooling

bM represents offset power like

signal processing Battery backup Site cooling

System Capacity
Defined as the amount of traffic generated in the network given in bits per second.

Is a parameter to assess the capacity of the system.

Conclusion
Addition of micro sites increase power consumption but also increase system capacity. Breakeven point between power consumption and system capacity. Better to add micro sites than macro BS. Deployment of micro sites according to the requirements of scenario.
