INTRODUCTION OF DLW
Its foundation stone was laid on 23 April 1956 by the first president of India Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad which opened the golden chapter in the history of Indian railways DLW is diametrically streched in about 8.5 kms DLW is the sole producer of Diesel locomotives in such a large scale and has technical as well as structural collaboration with ALCO (American Locomotive ) and GM(General Motors). It also produces DG sets of ratings ranging from 800kw to 2400kw.

DLW is running under Indian government and certified with ISO-9001,ISO-14001 and OHSAS-18001. DLW has dedicated 5700 locomotives to the nation. 400 locomotives to Indian non railways customer in public and private sector.it also exported 100 locomotives to various country. Its workshop spread over 8Km in area. DLW exports its locomotives to various nations like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Angola, Sudan, Myanmar and many other NROs like BHEL,CIL etc.

TYPES OF DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES

Diesel Electric locomotives comes in three varieties according to the period in which they were designed.
1. DC-DC (DC generators supplying power to DC traction motors) 2. AC-DC (AC alternator output rectified to supply DC traction motors) 3. AC-DC-AC (AC alternator output rectified to DC and then inverted to 3 phase AC supply for the traction motors)

Component of diesel engine

1)-Valves-

valves for a two stroke engine, there may simply be an exhaust outlet and fuel inlet that is called valves system.

2)-Exhaust system- Exhaust system frequently contains device to

control pollution, both chemical and noise pollution.

3)-Cooling system- Combustion generates a great deal of

heat, and some of this transfer to the wall of the engine. Cooling system usually employ air or liquid (usually water) cooling.

4)-Piston- It is located in a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston rings

used for a two stock engine. Piston are act as a valve by covering and uncovering parts in the cylinder war.

5)-Crank shaft- A rotating

rod transmit mechanical power in a machine.

6)- Starter system- most piston engine use a starter motor powered by the
same battery as runs the rest of the electronic system.

7)- Lubrication system- Internal combustions engines require

lubrication in operation that moving parts slide smoothly over each other. In sufficient lubrication subjects the parts of the engine to metal to metal contact, fraction, heat build-up etc.

Traction motor
Electrical motor providing the primary rotational torque of a machine usually for conversion in to linear motion Dc series wound motor running on approximately 600 volt.

Alternator
Alternator generate the electricity by the same principle as Dc-generator.

when the magnetic field around the conductor changes a current is induced in the conductor according to the faradays law of electromagnetic induction.

BASIC COMPONENTS OF A DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE

STARTING OR CRANKING OF LOCOMOTIVE

A diesel engine is started (like an automobile) by turning over the crankshaft until the cylinders fire or begin combustion. The starting can be done electrically or pneumatically. Pneumatic starting was used for some engines. Compressed air was pumped into the cylinders of the engine until it gained sufficient speed to allow ignition, then fuel was applied to fire the engine. The compressed air was supplied by a small auxiliary engine or by high pressure air cylinders carried by the locomotive. Electric starting is now standard. It works the same way as for an automobile, with batteries providing the power to turn a starter motor which turns over the main engine. In older locomotives fitted with DC generators instead of AC alternators, the generator was used as a starter motor by applying battery power to it.

Inverter change the Dc voltage into Ac voltage. At the time of cranking starter draws very heavy current which is in the form of 800 amps and voltage becomes low. Voltage should not be less than 28v. After cranking of engine , alternator rotates the secondary alternator. Due to rotation of secondary alternator it gives the supply to the battery through the rectifier. And rectifier charge the battery during the running condition of locos.

Governor
A device used to measure and regulate the speed of an engine. The governor control the engine speed based on throttle handle position. Engine rpm is measured by a tacho generator or engine speed sensor mounted on a engine.

Engine Testing
PurposeTo check the leakage in oil, fuel oil and water ckt. to check the capability of engine i.e-BHP. to check the engine RPM at different notches. checking for any abnormalities
