Some local or international tourism services offer package tour to Lorentsz National Park Most tourist find their way to this area as part of a package tour which has originated from within Papua at the Baliem Valley August-December is the best season to come to Lorentsz National Park Tourism was limited to less than 100 people in 1998. Before recent civil unrest, some 50 climbers ascended Puncak Jaya each year. There are some hotels in Wamena and some modern (with traditional style) resorts near Baliem Valley Visitors need several permits from different places (ministries, army, police etc) to travel to the island in general and climbing the mountain specifically.

The predominantly open-cast mining techniques have had serious environmental impacts: 250,000 tones of heavy metal and other wastes are poured into the local river every day, there are also oil spillages, logging for fuel and extensive dormitory development to house the work force of 4,000 (Handelsman, 2009; Kartawinata & Widjaja,1988; Petocz,1989).
Puncak Jaya

One petroleum exploration title held by Conoco remains in the Park on the southeastern edge. A forestry concession outside the eastern boundary of Lorentz also directly affects the site by permitting illegal water-accessed logging and poaching, a taking for which compensation is never considered.

The Effect of the Copper and Gold mining

1. Some hills and small mountains were not there anymore 2. Millions of Trees were cut down 3. Thousand of animals from insects to big wild animals died 4. River got polluted 5. Fresh water fishes died 6. People cant use water for drink and cooking 7. Sea also got polluted as the river brought the tailing into the sea 8. Sea fishes and other sea fauna died 9. The air nearby the mining is not fresh anymore 10. Causing global warming

Environment

Security

A greater and growing threat comes from road and lane building and uncontrolled tourism in the vulnerable high altitude swampy Lake Habbema basin. Other threats include three road schemes which would traverse Lorentz National Park including a road between Timika on the western boundary and Aramsolki in the centre of the park (Kartawinata and Widjaja, 1988). A minor and localized threat comes from uncontrolled tourism developments in the Lake Habbema area (a high altitude swampland). Trekking to Mt. Jaya has already had severe ecological impacts due to littering and firewood collecting. Hiking in the moss-fern ecosystem will certainly lead to more degradation.

Problem Review
Connectivity between region is not well developed Development gap between western and eastern parts of Indonesia

High cost of materials distribution high price

eg: cement in Papua Rp 1.5 million/sack ~156 USD, in Java 55000/sack ~6 USD. Gasoline in Papua Rp 70.000/liters ~7USD, in Java Rp 4500/liters ~0.5 USD

High cost of transportation from country central The quality of human resources in eastern region very different compared to western region Natural resources are dominated authorized by foreign company National political issue sometimes became a purpose of some actions
24

Recommendation
Promote the establishment of good connectivity by air, sea and land : Improvement and expansion of Timika Airport, Improvement both of Road and Seaport.

Synergy, coordination, integration and communication of stakeholders is a prerequisite for the development of tourism ; Keep the attempts debottle necking (solution)

For investment in the tourism needs commitment of stakeholders, especially in eliminating high cost economy

Tourism infrastructure should receive priority attention from the central government and local
26

Recommendation
Need for human resource readiness : Preparation of quality human resources through manpower training and capacity building for universities; Need to think out of the box (not dictate state) ; Undertake initiatives in the region in the implementation of enterprising spirit of the government in the frame of regional autonomy

Need for local preparedness goal area destinations : Ensure allocation of mining zones for Papua Province Spatial Plan as well as in regency level spatial planning documents;

The tourism sector has the potential rescue Indonesia's economic crisis facing Europe and the economic slowdown USA
