GWS Hospital
A chain of hospitals established 10 years ago. Current specialities : Surgery, Ophthalmology, Radiology,

Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, Neuro medicine, paediatrics, Pathology, Skin & VD, Urology. Future prospects : Inclusion of Oncology, Geriatrics & Nuclear Medicine. Expansion plans on the anvil to cater surging demands. Expansion plans upto 500 beds facility.

Challenges
Proper human resource planning, availability of nurses of stipulated

skill sets. Opening of a nursing school in the current campus. Expected number of nurses the hospital would need after expansion. Providing quality healthcare.(Couple of near disasters and a death in past because of nursing failure).

Current Statistics
Total no. Of beds = 221 (approx) Total no: of doctors : 41 No: of anaesthetics : 4 Total no: of Nurses = 98 Expected no: of nurses required for 500 beded hospital = 200.

Factors to be considered for Manpower planning


Stock-taking: The principle is to identify how many people are needed at every level of the organization to achieve business objectives- in line with overall strategic plans - & what kind of knowledge, skills, abilities & other characteristics these people need. The optimal staffing of modern health services requires many different types of staff. These include; Clinical workers - doctors & nurses. Technical staff for diagnostic services, such as laboratory & radiology, pharmacy staff.

Environment health workers, such as health inspectors.


Preventive & promotive staff, such as community health workers, administrative staff, etc

Factors to be considered for Manpower planning


Forecasting : For increased capacity and demands, No. Of patients allocation per Nurse (Personnel to population ratio). Working hours of nurses per patient , as per type of ailment and criticality. The types of health staff in a particular hospital are dictated by the kinds

of health services provided & level of technology available. Expert opinion about people's health needs to staff requirements. Health needs are derived from the determination of disease specific mortality & morbidity rates. The staff requirements are evaluated from the norms for the number, kind, frequency, & quality of services,& staffing standards.

How to overcome difficult nursing care situation?


Mapping of human capital architecture:

Core knowledge nurses. Traditional job based nurses.

Cross functional training and Succession planning. Long term association based incentives. Recruitment from within the pool of long term associated nurses for internal

requirements.
