Making Connections
WE HAVE RULES IN SCHOOL, LAWS IN OUR COUNTRY. WHAT IS A LAW? WHY DO WE HAVE LAWS?

Making Connections
Ordinarily, a law could be defined as a set of rules that a country or a community reinforces for the good of every citizen. Laws are created to protect certain values that are important to a community.

LAWS IN THE CHURCH

Why do we have laws in the Church?

They guide us to choose what is good.

LAWS IN THE CHURCH

What are the two aspects of Christian laws?
First, they are based on what it means to be a member of the Kingdom of God to love God, others and ourselves. Second, they promote Christian values, like respect for life, property of others, truth, and even, respect for other creations (cf. CFC 802).

How did these laws come to be? Let us go through the Sacred Scriptures to know more about them.

QUESTION: WHAT IS THE LAW IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?

God gave to His Chosen People the Law of the Covenant. These include the Ten Commandments, the guidelines for religious celebrations, and even behavior in front of other people.

For an Israelite then to show His great faith in God, one must be very obedient to the laws of the Covenant. Any sin that were committed meant that they were not able to follow the commandments of God. (CFC 807, b). However, some of the Israelites focused too much on following the laws without knowing the value behind them.

WE RESPOND
Can we still follow the Ten Commandments today? Why should we follow them?

WE PRAY
We thank God for the gift of laws in our school, in our country and in the Church as our guides in doing what is good to help us enter the Kingdom of God. We also ask God for guidance and strength so we would be able to follow these rules faithfully and wholeheartedly.

WE RESPOND ACTIVITY: PAINT ME A PICTURE How do we show our love to God?

We Pray
God, my Father, may I love You in all things and above all things. May I reach the joy which You have prepared for me in Heaven. Nothing is good that is against Your Will, and all that is good comes from Your Hand. Place in my heart a desire to please You and fill my mind with thoughts of Your Love, so that I may grow in Your Wisdom and enjoy Your Peace.

CLE 5 THIRD QUARTER

GROUP CHECK ACTIVITY

What is the second commandment of love? What does the second commandment of love mean? Can we love God without loving our fellow men? What does Jesus mean when we He used the word neighbor in the commandment?

DISCUSSION

The second commandment is like this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself (cf Mt 22:37-40).

DISCUSSION
In this commandment, Jesus clearly tells us that aside from loving God, we also need to love the people around us. As persons, we are part of a family or of a community. We interact and relate to them. In every action that we do, must able to show our love and concern for them.

DISCUSSION
One cannot say I love God, yet hates his fellow human. Jesus said whoever loves God must also love his fellow man (1 John 4:19-21). Jesus also gave a new meaning to neighbor. Neighbor now refers to everyone: those in need (read parable of the Good Samaritan), and even our enemies (Mt 5:44).

REMEMBER!!!

Christ made it clear that whatever we do the least of my brothers and sister, you did it to me (Mt 25:40) (cf CFC 817).

We Respond:
What does it mean to having a loving faith? How can we show a faith that loves?

STUDENT ACTIVITY How do the commandments of God guide me in my life?

Ten Commandments Law of Love

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT

Why should we follow rules or laws? What happen if we do not follow them? Are the commandments mentioned in the Old Testament still applicable to us today? Why or why not? Why is loving faith more important than mere obedience to the law? Why is love of God and neighbor the greatest commandment?

We Pray Come, Holy Spirit! Help us to show our love to our fellow men, who are in need. Give us humility also to show our love even to the persons who have hurt or caused us pain. Inspire us to go out of our way to love them. Amen.
