Introduction of SS7
I
 What is SS7?
L  SS7 is an architecture for performing out-of-band
signaling in support of call-establishment, billing,
I routing & information-exchange function of
public switched telephone network(PSTN).It
C identifies the functions to be performed by
signaling network & a protocol to enable their
O performance.

O  Originally a network of fixed-line analog
telephone systems, the PSTN is now almost

SS7 Signaling Link Types
L

C
O
N
S SS7 Link Types
I A link (access) Connects signaling end point (SCP or SSP) to STP

L B link (bridge)
Connects an STP to another STP; typically, a quad of B links interconnect
peer (or primary) STPs (STPs from a network connect to STPs of another
network)

I Connects STPs performing identical functions, forming a mated pair (for

C link (cross) greater reliability)

C Connects a secondary (local or regional) STP pair to a primary (inter-

D link (diagonal) network gateway) STP pair in a quad-link configuration; the distinction

O
between B and D links is arbitrary

E link (extended) Connects an SSP to an alternate STP

N F link Connects two signaling end points (SSPs and SCPs) in the same local
(fully associated) network

manage, and release trunk circuits that
N carry voice and data between SSPs
S
ADVANTAGES OF SS7
I
• Faster call set-up.
L • Greater trunking (or Queuing) efficiency.
• Information transfer.
I
• The private nature of SS7 networks is critical for
C security and reliability.
• SS7 carries information of every call in the
O network.
• SS7 provide the bridge between circuit and
N packet switched networks.
S
Applications
I
L Prepaid Calling Unified Messaging
 
 Local Number  800 / Free Phone
Portability (LNP) Services
I  Global Roaming  Short Message
 International Callback Service (SMS)
C  Virtual Office  Tele-voting
 Internet Call Waiting/  Location-based

CONCLUSION
I
• SS7 is the world’s largest data network. It
L links telcos, cellular long-distance networks
I nationwide and worldwide.
• SS7 interconnects thousands of telephone
C company providers into one common
signaling network.
O
• SS7’ll continue to evolve as new features are
N added to the Advanced Intelligent Network.
