INTRODUCTION
A window function is a mathematical function that is zero-valued outside

design of FIR filters from IIR filters.
PROBLEMS The main problem associated with the data analysis was the leakage effect.
The main problem associated with the design of FIR filters from IIR filters was
gibbs oscillations.
Leakage effect
If there are two sinusoids, with different frequencies, leakage can interfere with the ability to distinguish them spectrally. If their frequencies are dissimilar, then the leakage interferes when one sinusoid is much smaller in amplitude than the other. That is, its spectral component can be hidden or masked by the leakage from the larger component. But when the frequencies are near each other, the leakage can be sufficient to interfere even when the sinusoids are equal strength; that is, they become undetectable. How to reduce leakage effect: The first is that when the whole time capture is long enough to cover the complete duration of the signals. The second case is when a periodic signal is sampled at such a sampling rate that is perfectly synchronized with the signal period, so that with a block of capture, an integer number of cycles of the signal are always acquired
Gibbs phenomenon
The causal FIR filter obtained by simply truncating the impulse response coefficients of the ideal filters exhibit an oscillatory behavior in their respective magnitude responses which is more commonly referred to as the Gibbs phenomenon. How to reduce the gibbs oscillations; (1 )using a window that tapers smoothly to zero at each end. (2)providing a smooth transition from the passband to the stopband
In the above expression is the adjustable parameter and Io (x) is modified bessel function of first kind of order zero which can be written in power series expansion as -
Now Io (x) can be replaced by the cosh (cosine hyperbolic) function in the kaiser window function which can be modified as shown
sidelobe roll off ratio comparison between cosh and kaiser windows for N=101
ripple ratio comparison between cosh and kaiser windows for N=101
Cosh+hamming, has better ripple ratio than combination of kaiser+hamming. Cosine hyperbolic provides better far stop band attenuation than kaiser window.
Conclusion
Advantages
cosh has computational cost advantage due to having no power series expansion in the time domain representation. Cosh provides better sidelobe roll off ratio characteristics.
Disadvantages
The ripple ratio of the cosh is less than that of kaiser window function.
