E-ink

History:
Joe Jacobson, professor of MIT media lab. In year 1995. He developed the concept of morphing a single book into many books. The feature of the book he suggested would have: Less power consumption Crisp appearance, clarity and contrast. Cost per page same as a book Less weight. He worked with two students J.D. Albert and Barrett Comiskey on Edisons principle and invented E-ink. E-ink involves two different concepts: Electrophoresis Microencapsulation.

Cont..
Electrophoresis is the motion of a charged particle with respect to electric field. Microcapsules actually holds the thin film of liquid along with the small pigments. Advantages of E-ink over traditional display: Superior contrast as they were made of same pigments that are used in printing It could be printed on any surface like plastic, metal or paper. The ink was capable of holding its image even after the power was turned off and was legible under low light.

Overview: Technology

Comparison with LCD

E-Ink
Less than 1 mm thick Lightweight Flexible Readable in sunlight Wide viewing angle Looks like real ink on paper Easily scaled to large sizes

LCD
Significantly thicker than 1 mm Power supply and glass makes LCDs relatively heavy Rigid Difficult to see in bright light situations Limited viewing angle Lacks the appeal of ink on paper Significant price increase when scaled up Requires significant power to hold images Does not perform well in low temperatures Distorts when pressure is applied
6

Holds image without power drain Broad temperature range Does not distort under finger pressure.

Application:
Multiple uses
Readers: books and newspapers Advertising: signs, magazine inserts Watches

E-ink

Consumer Benefits:
Contrast makes E-Ink much easier to read than font on a screen Saves space as many different books can now be stored within the same unit More portable and requiring less power than traditional LCD displays
E-ink 8

Societal Benefits:
Cuts down on waste generated through the disposal of traditional paper Low-power display capabilities allow for a longer battery life than regular LCD displays leading to a system which needs to be charged less frequently

E-Ink in Indian Market

Most awaited Kindle 2 e-ink reader is finally launched in India Kindle has strong architecture behind and allows using for 10 days with single charge There is a great point here that Amazon does not have any book distribution in India. They dont have any warehouse any office of operation. Kindle is a perfect device which lets Amazon enter in any country since the cost of operation of such model is very less
