What is an Ad hoc Network ?

Collection of mobile wireless nodes forming a network without the aid of any infrastructure or centralized administration.

Why Ad Hoc Networks ?

Ease of deployment
Speed of deployment Decreased dependence on infrastructure

Ad Hoc Network characteristics

peer-to-peer multihop dynamic

zero-administration low power autonomous autoconfigured

But, most of these have exceptions!

Ad Hoc Network Application

Personal area networking cell phone, laptop, ear phone, wrist watch Military environments soldiers, tanks, planes Civilian environments taxi cab network meeting rooms sports stadiums boats, small aircraft Emergency operations search-and-rescue policing and fire fighting

Advantage
Router Free
Connecting to files on other computers and/or the Internet without the need for a wireless router is the main advantage of using an ad hoc network. Because of this, running an ad hoc network can be more affordable than a traditional network---you don't have the added cost of a router. However, if you only have one computer an ad hoc network won't be possible.

Mobility
Ad hoc networks can be created on the fly in nearly any situation where there are multiple wireless devices. For example: emergency situations in remote locations make a traditional network nearly impossible, but "The medical team can utilize 802.11 radio NICs in their laptops and PDAs and enable broadband wireless data communications as soon as they arrive on the scene.

Speed
Creating an ad hoc network from scratch requires a few settings changes and no additional hardware or software. If you need to connect multiple computers quickly and easily, then an ad hoc network is an ideal solution.

MANET
There are currently 2 variations of mobile network: Infrastructure Network Infrastructure less Network

A mobile adhoc network is a infrastructure less network allow us to communicate emergency search and resuce operation.

Example of AD-HOC Network

Bringing up an Ad hoc Network

In the scenario, the routes are updated
1. First between B & C, 2. then between B & A , 3. Then between B & C again confirming that A and C both can reach each other via B
A
Topology updated

Topology updated

Topology Update Due To Link Failure

B E

Mobility of nodes may cause link breakage requiring route updates Assume link between B & C breaks because of some reason Nodes A & C are still reachable via D and E So old route between A &C was A->B->C is to be replaced by A->D->E->C All five nodes are required to incorporate this change in their routing table This change will happen first in nodes B & C Then A & E Then D

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Formed by wireless hosts which may be mobile Without (necessarily) using a pre-existing infrastructure Routes between nodes may potentially contain multiple hops

Examples of such networks

Sensor networks
Automotive networks Military applications

Summary and Conclusions

Ad Hoc Networking is well-established as a viable research area Infrastructureless operation has many application. Ad hoc networks can be glued to the Internet and then provide wireless extension domains.
