WHAT IS AN APPLICATION LETTER?

A letter of application, also known as a cover letter, is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience.

TYPES OF APPLICATION LETTERS

SOLICITED: If you apply for a specific position that has been advertised, use targeted application.
UNSOLICITED: If you do not know wether the opening is available or not, use a general application.

A successful application letter motivates a potential employer to read your resume with interest and to arrange an interview.

RULES TO BE FOLLOWED WHILE PREPARING AN APPLICATION LETTER


An application letter should be brief, no longer than 1 to 1 n pages. Application letters and resumes should not be folded for mailing. Address the letter to an individual or use simplified format. Proofread your letter carefully, it must be accurate.

Opening section- Capture the readers interest & make him want to read your resume Middle section- Touches upon your key qualifications and skills Closing section- Requesting an interview

OPENING SECTION(GAIN ATTENTION)

Name the person from whom you learnt about job opening.
Provide information about how your qualifications fit the job requirement. Mention one of the companys significant accomplishments to catch the readers eye

Make sure to include the title of the position for which you are applying in the 1st paragraph In solicited letters of application, mention how you found out about the vacancy. In unsolicited application letter, openings with a list of your qualifications may be essential as you need to convince the reader that the company would benefit by hiring you, even though there is no specific opening.

Examples:

Are you looking for a result-oriented marketing executive with over six years of experience in all phases of marketing and sales management?( Gains attention by emphasizing applicants strengths and identifying the position of interest.) Creative! Knowledgeable! Organized! Just what you want in a new copywriter for Los Advertising Agency.

MIDDLE SECTION(CONVINCING THE EMPLOYER THAT YOU FIT THE JOB)

Your understanding of the job requirements

Convince the reader that you have studied the position sufficiently to know that your qualification match the requirements

MIDDLE SECTION(CONTD..)

Your educational achievements, work experience, special qualifications that may give you an edge over other applicants
Personal information, such as your marks/grade average, the college activities in which you have participated, honors and awards you have received, evidence of your ability to shoulder responsibility.

EXAMPLE:
Mr. Whitehead, my solid record of experience in sales plus my marketing major match your requirements for a Classic Hardware Marketing representative. My accomplishments in the sales positions listed on my resume attest to my marketing skills. I have the personal qualities, as well as the education and experience, to benefit your organization. I am energetic, goal oriented individual who works effectively in team efforts as well as through individual marketing contacts.

CLOSING SECTION(PROMOTING ACTION)


Offer to provide additional information that the reader may require The dates on which you might be available for an interview Requesting an interview

EXAMPLE:
May I have an interview to discuss this opportunity with you, Mr. Oliver? I am confident that my knowledge and my work experience ,combined with my dedication, work ethic, and energy, will add value to your organization. (specifically requests an interview, uses the persons name, emphasizes teamwork, provides contact information, and suggests willingness to accommodate the employers schedule.)
