Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

Presentation Objectives
Define ISDN, its standards and the type of services offered. ISDNs Block Diagram Types of ISDN Channels Types of ISDN Connections Advantages

What Is ISDN????
ISDN is a method of transmission. It is a system of digital phone connections which has been available for over a couple of decades. This system allows voice and data to be transmitted simultaneously across the world using end-to-end digital connectivity. It is designed to carry voice, data, images, video etc. isdn standardized by ITU.

Integrated Services Digital Network

Types of Channel
B Channel (Bearer), it carry data by employing circuit-switching technique. D Channel (Data), it carry control signals by employing packet-switching technique.
Channel Data Rates (Kbps)

Bearer (B) 64 Data (D) 16, 64

Types of ISDN Connections

BRI(Basic Rate Interface), for home uses. PRI(Primary Rate Interface), for large office uses.

Terminal Equipment Type 1 (TE1) - Compatible with the ISDN network. Example: Personal computers, fax machine or videoconferencing machine. Terminal Equipment Type 2 (TE2) - Not compatible with the ISDN network. Example: Analog telephone or modem, requires a TA (TE2 connects to TA). Terminal Adapter (TA) - Converter device that converts standard electrical signals into the form used by ISDN, it allows non-ISDN devices to operate on an ISDN network(sometimes called "ISDN Modems"). Network Termination type 1 & 2 (NT1 and NT2) - A small connection box that physically connects the customer site to the Telecom local loop, provides a four-wire connection to the customer site and a twowire connection to the network .

ISDN Reference Points

ISDN Reference Points

R-References the connection between a non-ISDN compatible device and a TA. S-References the points that connect into the NT2 or customer-switching device. T-References the outbound connection from the NT2 to the ISDN network or NT1. U-References the connection between the NT1 and the ISDN network owned by the telephone company.

Carries a variety of user traffic, such as digital video, data, and telephone network services, using the normal phone circuit-switched network It provides better quality of voice data than an analog phone because it is a circuit switched telephone network system. ISDN takes only 2 seconds to launch a connection while other modems take 30 to 60 second for establishment. Provides a faster data transfer rate than Dial- Up modems by using the 64-kbps bearer channel (B channel). Can combine multiple B channels to bandwidth of 128 kbps. Support of voice and non-voice applications in the same network.

ISDN Advantages

Summary
ISDN is a switched digital network ISDN Can be used for establishing a point-to-point digital connection. In both BRI and PRI number of B Channels vary in each case. B channels can be combined together to achieve a higher communication speed.
