Other Referencing Tips

Do not keep references and quotations on scraps of paper. Use a ringbinder or similar journal to write notes on projects/ assignments and keep references and quotes. Put your references into your assignment as you proceed do not leave until the end there is nothing worse than looking for a reference you have lost!

Further referencing tips Ordering your References alphabetically

Create a table (1 column wide by say 20 rows) in word for you Reference List Enter references as you go along, author first When you have finished your essay, do a data sort in ascending alphabetical order to re-arrange your references correctly Erase the table border (no border) if you wish

Final Tips Re-using references/ articles

Consider some system of keeping references so that you can re-use Keep journals with essay notes/ references from year 1 of your studies Copy your tables of references and create an overall reference list Keep pdf files of articles in your own archive perhaps saving under subject folders

Looking ahead to advanced referencing

Its always a good idea to be able to cite references manually, as we have done here However, when you are writing a large report for instance your final 3rd year dissertation you may wish to use an electronic referencing programme which link to Word Examples of these are Endnote and Zotero and there are Gradually more researchers are beginning to use these but you need some time and effort to learn them you need to balance this up with the potential benefits. Something to bear in mind for the future!
