INTRODUCTION
Since the Industrial Revolution the world has witnessed
incalculable technological achievements population growth corresponding increases in resource use

Side effects of all the activities and achievements include: pollution, landfills at capacity, toxic waste, global warming, resource and ozone depletion, and deforestation

All these efforts are straining the limits of the Earths carrying capacity its ability to provide the resources required to sustain life while retaining the capacity to regenerate and remain viable.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE BUILDING OR GREEN DESIGN?

-to significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and on the building occupants, green building design and construction practices address: sustainable site planning, safeguarding water and water efficiency, energy efficiency, conservation of materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. ---U.S. Green Building Council

PREAMBLE:

Green homes and buildings are increasingly becoming in vogue in neighbourhood and corporate circle around the world. Industry expert say that green home and buildings can even help save on energy and maintenance costs in homes and offices. However green home and buildings are yet to catch on a wide scale in the country. High input cost particularly with regard to green building continue to deter Indian consumer and eco friendly appliances remain available only in relatively small quantities in the market.

SOME BALATANT FACTS ABOUT LIVING INDOOR

Most of us spend about 90% of our time in indoors Many building product contain Chemicals commonly known as Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) that emit harmful vapours over time In a short time these vapours effect health running nose, tears from the eyes and throat irritation are typical symptoms. Over time, indoor chemical vapours from building materials may seriously impact reproductive health, increase the risk of cancer and contribute to respiratory illness like asthma

SOURCES OF INDOOR TOXINS AND AIR POLUTANTS

These are vapours from

House hold cleaners, solvents and paints Plastic resins, rubber and insulation foams Plastic flooring, synthetic textiles in carpets, curtain and furnitures Glues or adhesives , plywood or particle board and poly urethane wood sealants Pesticides used to spray indoor plants and pests

BUILDING OPERATION IMPACTS

49% of Sulfur Dioxide emissions 25% nitrous oxide emissions 10% of all particulate matter 1/3 of all energy consumption in US 2/3 of all electricity consumption in US disturbs natural habitats contaminates air, soil, and water depletes non-renewable resources of greenhouse gases 35% of carbon dioxide emissions

GREEN MATERIALS

Materials, production, use and disposal must be safe for the planet. Most of the materials have specific range of conditions in which they best work Sustainable building materials have the following features: Durable and easily maintained Less processing required Low odour Low emitting Cost-effective Aesthetic

SUSTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
(The Brundtland Commission,1987)

BENEFITS OF SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

Improves

occupant health, comfort, productivity, reduces pollution and landfill waste that are not easily quantified
A

sustainable building may cost more up front, but saves through lower operating costs over the life of the building
Sustainable

construction makes wise use of all the natural resources and a 50% reduction in energy use

Reduced water consumption by up to 30 percent or more

ECONOMICS OF GREEN BUILDINGS

Lower building operating expenses through reduced utility and waste disposal costs

Reduction in lighting energy requirements by at least 50 percent

Lower on-going building maintenance costs, ranging from salaries to supplies

Increase worker productivity by six to 16 percent economic development opportunities

New

Cut heating and cooling energy consumption by 60 percent

CONCLUSION:

The drive to go green is undoubtedly welcome as the problems of water shortage, energy crisis and climate change are seemingly here to stay. Also the green concept has to be developed for local context so that they can be still be applied within the local and financial needs.
