INTRODUCTION
Drink and drive has been a common problem all through out the world. A lot of lives are lost due to drink and drive accidents. Many innocents lives are affected as well.

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Road accidents are one of the main causes of injury and death worldwide. Alcohol consumption impairs certain functions, such as visual acuity and reaction time, increasing the likelihood that accident occur. Alcohol makes you loose conscious and thereby can prove fatal.

ACCIDENTS REPORTED IN INDIA DUE TO DRINK & DRIVE

The number of people killed in road accidents caused by drink-driving has fallen to an all-time low, provisional government figures show. Deaths fell by 5%, from 400 in 2008 to 380 in 2009, while serious injuries fell 9% to 1,480. The number of accidents involving deaths remained at 350.

CONSEQUENCES
Injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers are completely preventable. Although there have been many measures taken worldwide against this, drink driving still presents a major concern. Driving Under the Influence of alcohol is a criminal offence in most of the countries worldwide, with heavy penalties which can lead to a driving ban and even imprisonment.

MEASURES
Like any other social problem, drinking and driving needs to be addressed properly through awareness campaigns and very strict rules. The government should undertake the task of creating awareness of the effects and consequences of drunk driving. The laws should be made much more strict relating to drink and drive.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Youth as well as elder should take the responsibility to educate people about the ill effects of drink and driving. They should create awareness as well as campaigns discouraging drink and drive.

LIMIT OF CONSUMPTION
The Indian Motor vehicles act, 1988, sets the limit of consumption of alcohol. Anything more than 30 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood for the first time would invite penalty.

PUNISHMENT
Currently, the government is making a lot of amendments to make laws strict regarding drink and drive. A fine of upto Rs. 5,000/- or imprisonment for 6 months or both is the current penalty.

RESULTS
Drinking leads to a lot of things that ruin ones life. In recent years, drinking has been a major cause of fatal accidents and other unlawful crimes such as rape, molestation, murder, etc.

CONCLUSION
We come to a conclusion that initiative by everyone to discard drink and drive will result in a safe India. Strict laws as well as strong and quick actions against offenders will bring this situation of crisis under control.
