The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System(UMTS) is one of a family of systems known as Third generation or 3G system. UMTS aims to merge the best features of mobile communications ,fixed line network and the internet.

3G systems are designed to provide true global mobility. They aim to provide a wide range of services including telephony, paging, messaging, location services and multimedia.3G systems include: 1. UMTS 2. CDMA2000 3. Freedom of Multimedia Access (FOMA)

Three significant technologies that meet the specifications of IMT-2000 are : CDMA2000 UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access(UTRA) WCDMA

230 MHz of spectrum is allocated on a worldwide basis. The allocation consisted of 2 blocks: 140 MHz from 1885-2025MHz and 90MHz from 21102200MHz.Within this two further blocks, each of 30MHz,were reserved for the satellite segment of IMT-2000.1980-2010MHz and 2170-2200MHz are satellite uplink and downlink.

The UMTS System architecture is divided into three key domains: User Equipment (UE) Radio Network Subsystems(RNS) Core Network (CN) domain

In UMTS, the mobile station is known as the User Equipment (UE). The UE is connected to the UTRAN via the Uu interface. There are different classes and physical forms of UE, which have different capabilities according to application.

This is the section of the UMTS network that interfaces to both the UE and the core network. The overall radio access network, i.e. collectively all the Radio Network Subsystem is known as the UTRAN UMTS Radio Access Network. The Radio Network Subsystem comprises two main components: Radio Network Controller (RNC) Node B

Radio Network Controller (RNC) The RNC is responsible for all of the radio functionality in the UMTS system and controls one or more Node Bs. RNCs are connected via the Iur interface and connect to the core network over the Iu-CS and Iu-PS interfaces.

Node B

A Node B provides the radio interface into the UTRAN.A single Node B may support one or more cells. It connects to the RNC via the Iub interface.

The core network is divided into : Circuit Switch(CS) domain Packet Switch(PS) domain The network elements of the circuit switched domain are offering CS bearer services. They are inherited from GSM. The packet switched domain is responsible to offer PS bearer services.Based on GPRS core network elements, the PS bearer services are currently non-real time services. But standards are on the way to enhance this infrastructure, so that also real-time services can be served via the PS domain transmission infrastructure.
