What is a variable?
A letter that represents a number, for example the variable in 5c is c. It can be positive or negative.

Pick out the Variable(s)!

1. 2. 3. 4. 5yt 6c + 8g 5c + 7c 4. 6u/4v

What is a constant?
A number like 4 or -5. That has no variable to speak of.

How many constants?

1. 2. 3. 4. 4y + 6 7+5 -6x 7 9cde + cde

How many constants?

1. 2. 3. 4. 4y + 6 7+5 -6x 7 9cde + cde 1. 2. 3. 4. One Two One None

What is a coefficient?
A number that has given up its "constant" status and is with a variable like -5v. The -5 is the bearer of this term's name.

Mini Lesson
Whenever you see a variable without a number next to it like y or n, then the coefficient is always 1. This invisible ones existence causes y to become 1y and n to become 1n.

Find the coefficients

1. 2. 3. 4. 5v + 6 5cdfd + 9n n+3 zx + 3

1. 2. 3. 4. 5v + 6 5cdfd + 9n n+3 zx + 3 1. 2. 3. 4. 5 5&9 1 1&1

What is the leading coefficient?

It is the number/variable that is associated with the highest exponent in a group. An example of this would be 56 + xc9. In this case c is the exponent of the biggest value.

Which is the leading coefficient?

1. 2. 3. 4. 445+6 c+5 55+66 67 + 89

What are like terms?

they are terms like 6c and 5c that share the same variable. 6cx and 5c arent the same variables so they arent like terms though.

Are these like terms?

1. 2. 3. 4. 3x & x 6y & 5y 7y & 7t 8f & 0

What is a monomial?
Something (variable, a constant or coefficient and variable together) with a whole number exponent (the exponents must always be positive NEVER negative and they must never be variables either). It has no adding or subtraction but may have multiplying and dividing/fractions if the former isnt included.

Is this a Monomial?

What is a polynomial?
A group of monomials added or subtracted ONE or more times. This creates binomials, trinomials and so on.

Are these polynomials?
