Beck
The Father of Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Aaron Beck was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on July 18, 1921. He was the youngest of five children. Both of his parents were Russian Jewish immigrants. he was born.
Beck felt that he was supposed to be a replacement for his deceased sister. He felt this way mostly because of his mothers constant expressions of disappointment over him being a boy and not a girl.
Educational Background
Beck attended Brown University where he majored in English and political science. and graduated magna cum laude in 1942. While attending Brown a member of the Phi Society and served as the Brown Daily Herald. University Beck became Theta Kappa Honor the associate editor of
After Brown he went to Yale Medical School. He graduated in 1946 with his M.D.
Goal: to change the way clients think about and/or interpret situations as well as their daily behaviors
Based on the notion that our thoughts, rather than people, situations, and/or events, cause how we feel and/or behave Emphasizes the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. Aimed at reducing or suppressing individuals symptoms as quickly and economically as possible.
Clients are educated regarding the nature of stress, the possible negative outcomes related to stress, and the steps that can be taken to avoid those negative outcomes.
Three Phases: 1. Initial Conceptualization: therapist educates clients on the general nature of stress 2. Skills Acquisition and Rehearsal: therapist works with clients to develop and strengthen a variety of coping skills. (Ex. Emotional skills, relaxation skills, cognitive skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and socialization skills. 3. Follow Through: the therapist provides opportunities for the clients to practice using their coping skills.
2. To help clients develop skills for modifying beliefs, identifying distorted thinking, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors.
