Medical School Apps: The Muscular System is an application containing study materials that are most useful for students to prepare for their Medical School courses. This application contains flash cards, summary notes, recommended readings and quiz for the following sections:

Muscular System and General function of Muscles Skeletal Muscle Smooth Muscle and Cardiac Muscle Muscle Band Structure Exercise and muscle Movement of Muscles Muscle Naming Convention

General Information

allow movement of bones via contraction skeletal muscles attach to bones, cartilage or tissues through tendons mostly Voluntary Contractions: controlled consciously by the nervous system

Myofibers, Sarcolemma and Myofibrils

myofibers are a single cell component that is cylindrical in shape. sarcolemma is the cell membrane of the muscle cell the banding pattern in muscles are due to the arrangements of myofilaments and sarcomeres myofibrils are long tube-like organelles that aligned with sarcolemma inside the cell. Responsible for the structural support of the cell. Contains myofilaments. there are two types of myofilaments: actin and myosin the alignment of myofibrils gives the muscle cell a striated (banded) appearance

Major Tissues

a skeletal muscle comprises of 3 major tissues: endomysium, perimysium, epimysium endomysium is a thin tissue that covers the muscle cell perimysium: membrane that is responsible for bundling up the muscle fibers epimysium: connective tissues that act as the outer covering of skeletal muscle

Other parts of the skeletal muscle

tendon: a fibrous tissue that connects a muscle to a bone. It provides durability of the muscle tissue aponeuroses: fibrous sheet that connects a moving point and the muscle fascia: fibrous tissue layers that aids in separating skeletal muscles

Skeletal Muscle and the Action Potential

action potential causes sarcoplasmic reticulum to release calcium ions calcium ions causes the myofilaments slide past one another, causing the entire muscle to contract. once the calcium ions are being actively absorbed back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, the muscle will then be relaxed
