Surah Al-E-Imran

2:154

Think not of those who are killed in the Way of Allh as dead. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision- (3:169)

Imam Ahmad reported that `Abdur-Rahman bin Ka`b bin Malik narrated from his father that Allah's Messenger said: The believer's soul is a bird that feeds on the trees of Paradise until Allah sends it back to its body when the person is resurrected.
Ahmad

This Hadith includes all the believers in its general meaning. Thus, the fact that the Qur'an mentions the martyrs in particular in the above Ayah serves to honor, glorify and favor them (although the other believers share the rewards they enjoy).
Ibn Kathir

2:154
The souls of the martyrs are inside green birds and move about in Paradise wherever they wish. Then, they take refuge in lamps that are hanging under the Throne (of Allah). Your Lord looked at them and asked them, `What do you wish for' They said, `What more could we wish for while You have favored us with what You have not favored any other of your creation' He repeated the question again. When they realize that they will be asked (until they answer), they said, `We wish that You send us back to the earthly life, so that we fight in Your cause until we are killed in Your cause again,' (because of what they enjoy of the rewards of martyrdom). The Lord then said, `I have written that they will NOT be returned to it (earthly life) again.
Muslim/ Ibn Kathir.

Surah Al-Mumenoon "So that I may do good in that which I have left behind!" No! It is but a word that he speaks, and behind them is Barzakh (a barrier) until the Day when they will be resurrected. (23:100)

Barzakh ( is a Persian and Arabic Word meaning "obstacle", "hindrance", "separation",or "barrier". Al-Barzakh is generally viewed as the barrier between the physical and spiritual worlds, in which the soul awaits after death and before resurrection on Qiyamah.

Who is a Martyr?
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (SAW)said: "Whom do you reckon to be martyr amongst you?'' The Companions replied: "The one who is killed in Allah's way.'' He (SAW) said, "In that case, the martyrs among my people would be few.'' The Companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Then who are the martyrs?'' He (SAW) replied, "He who is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr; he who dies naturally in the Cause of Allah is a martyr; he who dies of plague is a martyr; and he who dies of a belly disease is a martyr; and he who is drowned is a martyr.'' 2:154 Immediately after the death of 'Uthman Ibn Mazun, before his funeral, the Prophet went with 'A'ishah to visit Khawlah, and 'A'ishah said afterwards:

"The Prophet kissed 'Uthman when he was dead, and I saw his tears flowing over 'Uthman's cheek.
At his funeral the Prophet heard an old woman address the dead man with the words, "Be glad, 0 father of Sa'ib, for Paradise is thine. "The Prophet turned to her somewhat sharply and said: "What giveth thee to know that? "0 Messenger of God, she protested, "it is Abu s-Sa'ib!" "By God, he said, "we know naught but good of him. Then, to make it clear that his first remark had been in no sense directed against 'Uthman but merely against her for saying more than she had right to say he turned to her again and added: "It would have been enough for thee to say: "He loved God and His messenger.'

2:154

Umar(RA) confessed to having been somewhat shaken in his high regard for his brother-in-law by the fact that he had not been blessed with a martyr's death. He said: "When 'Uthman ibn Mazun died without being slain, he fell immeasurably from my esteem and I said: 'Behold this man who was severest of us all in abstaining from the things of this world, and now he hath died and was not slain.' And so he remained in 'Umar's opinion until the Prophet(SAW) and Abu Bakr had both died natural deaths, and he upbraided himself for having lacked a true sense of values, and said to himself: "Out upon thee, the best of us die! he meant "die naturally" and 'Uthman returned in his estimation to the place he had formally held

Surah Al-Baqara

2:153-156

To Allh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and whether you disclose what is in your ownselves or conceal it, Allh will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allh is Able to do all things. (2:284)

Hadith Al Qudsi 2:153-156 Narrated Abu Huraira (RA) When this verse was revealed to Allah's Messenger (SAW) The narrator said: The Companions of Allah's Messenger(SAW) felt it hard. They came to him, sat down on their knees and said: 0 Messenger of Allah, we have been assigned with some duties (tasks) which we have capability to perform such as: prayer, fasting , fighting in Allah's way, and charity. Now this (the above mentioned verse) was revealed to you and it is beyond our power to live up to. Then Allah's Messenger (SAW)said: Do you intend to say what the people of the two Scriptures (the Jews and Christians) had said before you: "We hear and disobey". Rather you should say: "We hear, obey and seek your forgiveness, our Lord! And to You is the return". When the people recited it, their tongues became subdued with it. Then Allah revealed: "The Messenger believes in what is sent down to him from His Lord, and so do the believers (following him). Each one believes in Allah and His angels and His Books and His Messengers, saying: We differentiate not between any of His Messengers; and they say: We hear and seek your forgiveness, our Lord! And to You is the return". When they (the Companions) said the same, Allah abrogated this verse and Allah the All-Great, revealed a new one replacing it: "Allah burdens not a soul beyond its capacity. It gets every good that it earns and it suffers every ill that it earns. Our Lord! Punish us not, if we forget or make a mistake". (When they repeated the same words) Allah said: Yes: (The Companions further repeated the words as revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Our Lord! Do not lay on us a burden as that you had laid on those before us. Allah said: Yes: (They further repeated) Our Lord! impose not on us (burdens) which we have no strength to bear. Allah said: Yes: (They further repeated) And pardon us and provide us protection; and have Mercy on us. You are our Patron, so please grant us victory over the disbelieving people". Allah said: Yes: (2:285,6) (Muslim).

That night he slept with his wife, and in the morning he got up and performed ghusl. When he was about to go out, he wife told him that his son had died. 2:156 Imam Ahmad reported that Umm Salamah narrated: Once, Abu Salamah came back after he was with Allah's Messenger and said: I heard Allah's Messenger recite a statement that made me delighted. He said: No Muslim is struck with an affliction and then says Istirja` when the affliction strikes, and then says: `O Allah! Reward me for my loss and give me what is better than it,' but Allah will do just that.
Umm Salamah said: So I memorized these words. When Abu Salamah died I said Istirja` and said: "O Allah! Compensate me for my loss and give me what is better than it.'' I then thought about it and said, "Who is better than Abu Salamah'' When my `Iddah (the period of time before the widow or divorced woman can remarry) finished, Allah's Messenger asked for permission to see me while I was dyeing a skin that I had. I washed my hands, gave him permission to enter and handed him a pillow, and he sat on it. He then asked me for marriage and when he finished his speech, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! It is not because I do not want you, but I am very jealous and I fear that you might experience some wrong mannerism from me for which Allah would punish me. I am old and have children.'' He said: As for the jealousy that you mentioned, Allah the Exalted will remove it from you. As for your being old as you mentioned, I have suffered what you have suffered. And for your having children, they are my children too. She said, "I have surrendered to Allah's Messenger.'' Allah's Messenger married her and Umm Salamah said later, "Allah compensated me with who is better than Abu Salamah: Allah's Messenger .''
Ahmad/Muslim

2:156

Anas (RA) reported that: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "Let not one of you wish for death because of a misfortune which befalls him. If he cannot help doing so, he should say: 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as You know that life is better for me, and make me die when death is better for me".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Riyadh as Saleheen Commentary: Since man has no knowledge of his future, whether it is good or bad, so one should never desire for one's own death in consequence of frustration created by troubles and turmoil for two reasons. Firstly, desire for death is sheer impatience. Secondly, it is quite possible that remaining part of his life may be good for his religious and worldly life. So, it is prohibited to desire death. It is, however, permissible to desire for Shahadah or death in Makkah or Al-Madinah but it is a subject quite different from the one under discussion. However, if one has to express wish for his own death, he should do so in the words quoted in the Hadith concerned.

2:156 Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "A Muslim, male or female, continues to remain under trial in respect of his life, property and offspring until he faces Allah, the Exalted, with no sin record". [At-Tirmidhi]. Anas (RA) reported that: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "When Allah intends good for His slave, He punishes him in this world, but when He intends an evil for His slave, He does not hasten to take him to task but calls him to account on the Day of Resurrection.''
[At-Tirmidhi].

Riyadh as Saleheen Commentary : This Hadith shows that, for a Muslim, trials are also a blessing in this world because his sins are forgiven in proportion to the trials he has to face and his reward is increased with the Will of Allah. Thus, a Muslim should always be patient and contented in the event of trial because without these qualities he will not have the privilege associated with them. In fact, his impatience would increase his sins even further.
