The term group dynamic contains two terms:- Group and Dynamic. Group is basically a collectivity of two or more persons. Dynamic comes from Greek which means force.

The social process by which people interact face to face in small groups is called Group Dynamic. Group dynamic refers to changes, which take place within group members in a social setting. Group exist in every organisation and they affect the behaviour of their members.

Shaw defined it in 4 categories:Group is defined as consisting of individuals who perceive the existence of a group &their membership in it.

Group is defined on a basis of common motivation or goal.


In this class of definition looks in the structure of group. This class defines perceives the central element of a group to be interacting among its members.

Two or More Persons. Collective Identity. Interaction. Shared Goal Interest.

Groups are classified into different types:1.

Primary and Secondary Group:

Primary Group: A primary group is characterised by intimate, face to face interaction, association and co-operation. The membership of such groups is small based on intimate relationship. Example: Family, Friend. Secondary Group: It is more formal, general and remote. The member of such group may not have any interest in the problems and pleasures of others. Example: Working groups in an organisation.

Membership and Reference Groups:


Membership Group: It is a group to which a

member really belongs to. For example, being a member of a club.

Reference Group: It is one, which the individual


identifies himself or with which he would like to belong. For example, an individual who is an aspirant of being a member of a cricket group.

3. Formal and Informal Groups:

Formal Group: Such groups are created and

maintained to fulfill specific needs and tasks , which are related to the organisation.

Informal Group: These groups are created in the


organisation because of operation of social and psychological forces operating at work place.

Command and task group:

Command Group: In this group superior gives the

direction to its employees and there is downward hierarchical structure in an organisation. This kind of group is determined by organisational chart.

Task Group: It comprises of employees who work

together to complete the task. It is usually formed to solve the specific problems.
