ORGANISATION BEHAVIOUR

Organisation Behaviour is concerned with the study of what people do in an organisation and how that behaviour affects the performance of the organisation.
(Robbins: 1998,9)

Organizational Behavior:

OB is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organizations effectiveness.

OB studies three determinants of behavior in organizations: individuals, groups, and structure. OB applies the knowledge gained about individuals, groups, and the effect of structure on behavior in order to make organizations work more effectively.

OB is the study of what people do in an organization & how that affects the performance of the organization. There is increasing agreement as to the components of OB, but there is still considerable debate as to the relative importance of each: motivation, leader behavior and power, interpersonal communication, group structure & processes, learning, attitude development & perception, change processes, conflict, work design, & work stress.

The study of Organisational Behaviour involves: consideration of the interaction among the formal structure (organisational context in which the process of management takes place) the tasks to be undertaken the technology employed and the methods of carrying out work the behaviour of people the process of management the external environment

Interrelated dimensions influencing behaviour: The Individual - working environment should satisfy individual needs as well as attainment of organisational goals. The Group - formal and informal. Understanding of groups complements a knowledge of individual behaviour. The Organisation - impact of organisation structure and design, and patterns of management, on behaviour. The Environment - technological and scientific development, economic activity, governmental actions.

cannot abolish conflict and frustration not an absolute answer to problems. only one of the many systems operating within a tunnel vision The law of diminishing returns also operates in the case of organizational behaviour. manipulate people without regard for human welfare.
