During eclipse, pregnant women should not go out, if they do they will have miscarriage.

In many regions, it was believed that eclipses occur when evil mythological creatures attack the sun: a giant turtle (Vietnam), a jaguar (Latin America), a dragon (Asia) or werewolf (Romania) The Maoris believed that the lunar eclipse is a sign of victory over their enemy in a war.

In Tahiti, eclipse has been interpreted as the lovemaking of the sun and the moon. So, people in Tahiti find the event to be something to look forward to since the eclipse can bring a divine blessing. An eclipse was also thought to foretell the death of great people like the Roman emperor Nero and Catherine of Aragon. The pregnant women in Mexico wear bright red pants with safety pins attached during eclipse to avoid from suffering birth problems.

Eclipse
Takes place when the shadow of a celestial body partially or totally blocks another celestial body. Occurs when the sun, Earth and the moon are in a straight line.

Kinds of Shadows
Umbra the dark portion of the shadow Penumbra the lighter portion of the shadow.
(The position of the moon and Earth in relation to these portions determines whether an eclipse will be total or partial. )

If you are in the umbra of the shadow, you will see a total eclipse. If you are in the penumbra of the shadow, you will have a partial eclipse

Kinds of Eclipses
Solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the Earth. The moon blocks the light rays and casts a shadow on earth.

A total solar eclipse is visible on earth when the moon is on its perigee. It usually lasts for 2 to 3 minutes, the longest is 7 minutes. A solar eclipse occurs at least twice a year during the new moon phase of the moon.

Solar Eclipses
When the Moons shadow covers part of the Earth Only happens at New Moon Three types: Annular, Partial, and Total

Partial Solar Eclipse

Here is an animation showing a total solar eclipse

Remember that it is not safe to stare at a solar eclipse !!!

This animation shows that the moon creates a small shadow which Only allows certain areas of the earth to see a total solar eclipse.

Annular Solar Eclipse

When the Moon is too far to completely cover the Sunthe umbra doesnt reach the Earth Sun appears as a donut around the Moon

Is it safe to view solar eclipse directly with unaided eye?

What precautions in viewing solar eclipse can you suggest?

Lunar Eclipse
Occurs when the sun, Earth and the moon are in a straight line. The Earth casts a shadow on the surface of the moon. A lunar eclipse occurs 2 to 4 times a year during a full moon phase.

16 When the Earths shadow covers the Moon, we have a lunar eclipse

The diagram shows That the moon is covered by the Earths shadow, which makes this Eclipse safe to look at. Notice the moon sometimes turns red When totality occurs.

Why is the Moon red during an eclipse?

The Earths atmosphere filters some sunlight and allows it to reach the Moons surface The blue light is removedscattered down to make a blue sky over those in daytime Remaining light is red or orange Some of this remaining light is bent or refracted so that a small fraction of it reaches the Moon Exact appearance depends on dust and clouds in the Earths atmosphere

Tides
The rise and fall of the ocean waters. Formed because of the attraction between the moon and the Earth.

Kinds of Tides
There are 2 main kinds of tides: high tide and low tide. In 24 hours, two high tides and two low tides occur. Spring Tides occur when the moon and the sun are aligned at new moon or full moon. These tides are very high. Neap Tides when the sun and the moon are at right angles. (neither very high nor very low)

Importance of Tides
Fishermen watch the tides before they go fishing. They catch more fish when the tides are high than when they are low.

Boats veer to the center of the water and leave the ports when tides are high. Ships arrive and leave only at high tides when the water is deep enough to allow these vessels to come and go safely.
